  1. Has to be Albon. Brilliant race without any mistakes under constant pressure. Qualifying exceptionel too.
Honorable mentions to Norris, Verstappen, Russell and Antonelli.

    1. I would say Tsunoda also did really well today, it was strategy far more than his driving that cost him.

    2. Exactly, after all the hype over Sainz being Williams saviour he outqualified him and drove an incredibly assured race to score a big points haul. Clearly the driver of the weekend.

  2. I don’t know about driver of the weekend, but for driver of the race – Bernd Maylander.

Kept it on track for more laps than several of the rookies, and even Sainz, an experienced hand. Still showing speed and not making mistakes, despite his age, unlike Alonso and Hamilton…

Seriously though, I know this track has limited access roads, but the time it was taking to remove the cars was ridiculous. The safety car was out far too long, and having the recovery vehicles sat right on track for lap after lap with the F1 cars trundling past, when we’d already seen several cars bin it at slow speed seemed like madness to me. They should’ve red flagged at least one of those to allow more actual racing…

    1. You are serious or it’s jock?
Firstly, Alonso and Hamilton – 40th and multy champions.
But Sainz are 30 and… hasn’t any titles
Secondly…. Sainz in last race crashed in contrast to Hamilton.
And last year, Sainz accumulated many times more damaged equipment than Hamilton.
And so… who is “not making mistakes, despite his age”? : – ))))))))))))))

  3. Voted for Max. On a dry qualifier, he was the right behind the Mclaren duo, who were the pacesetters. On Sunday, there was a brilliant overtake on Oscar at the start. The place was later lost due to a wide moment. When the rain began to fall in the final leg of the race, he was back in play behind Lando. No other competitor seems to have the pace that Mclaren did at this week’s race and Lando drove a solid race no doubt. But this is another Max show in tricky weather conditions.

Antonelli was also impressive. For a rookie to bounce back from a Q1 exit in a tricky race other rookies struggled, it was quite a run to 4th place.

    1. @pinakghosh
On the other hand, Norris didn’t lose the lead from pole, aced every restart and had the measure of both Verstappen (who everyone should agree is a master of these conditions) and Piastri, before he dropped it.

      1. Norris was driving a car that had an average race pace advantage of at least half a second. He still made a mistake damaged his floor and made a mistake to let Max in his DRS.

Norris’ best win but with an equal car I doubt Norris gets P2 let alone a podium.

        Piastri likewise.

You can easily check data at F1-Tempo.

And that’s assuming Norris is as fast as Verstappen which I doubt he is but I’m inclined to assume he is for the sake of this discussion.

        1. This is also Driver of the Weekend, so let’s not forget that Norris was on pole in each of the three stages of qualifying, as well as FP1 (IIRC)

  4. I think the best drive was from Verstappen, but the ones that made me happiest were Antonelli, Albon, and Tsunoda.

To compare the top drivers, Verstappen wrenched the Red Bull into contention with McLarens that appeared much faster (just look at Norris’s pace vs the Ferraris at the end). He made an overtake from nowhere, which he eventually lost running deep and slow into a corner.

The McLarens eventually put him at arms-length, but then they both went off the track in ways that were disastrous for Piastri and easily could have been for Norris. In the end that meant that despite the McLaren being much faster, victory came down to the strategy coinflip, and could have gone either way.

Russell and Albon drove tidier races than either of them, but without being on fights and without the sense that they were wringing more speed from the car.

Antonelli’s race was great to watch as he drove well against the Saubers while also making mistakes (more overtakes!) – I’m sure it has been a morale boost – but 5th place ultimately came from safety car + strategy call + scrappiness. It’s full of wonderful signs for the future, but was not literally the best drive.

  5. Norris. Was good to see him holding on to his lead at the start and then managing the race in difficult conditions.

  6. I was hopeful that I’d be able to vote for Hamilton after a miracle debut for Ferrari. Sadly that dream was shattered yesterday!

Norris is the easiest option but I’ll go with Albon. We don’t know just how good the Williams is yet but he’s made it look stronger than Ferrari all weekend.

Driver ratings will be interesting. It seems drivers were either world class or dreadful this weekend.

  7. It’s Antonelli. Needs to back it up but that was an amazing debut
