Welcome to Friday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.
Comment of the day
Many of our readers’ comments about the passing of Eddie Jordan yesterday captured his one-of-a-kind spirit brilliantly. Here’s one from @Bernasaurus:
I wish he could read these comments. He added so much colour and cheekiness, especially in the ‘manufacturer era’. Some people are good at what they do, and Eddie seemed like someone who was good and enjoyed what they do.
The 191, Schumacher, one-two at Spa, for a scrappy underdog there were certainly plenty of pretty moments.
Damon Hill: 'When you’ve fought your way out of a small town south of Dublin to get to be in F1, you don’t squander millions on a ‘two-a-penny’ racing driver like me. So, I bought a Lear Jet with the proceeds. That annoyed him, to be sure!'
'Whether behind the wheel, on the pit wall or behind the microphone, Eddie’s unique personality and incredible enthusiasm always shone through. He will be remembered as one of motorsport’s greatest personalities and a true ambassador who will be much missed right around the globe.'
'I won’t be going to his funeral. I don’t go to funerals. I may not go to mine. He certainly won’t go to mine. So, it’s all fair. It always was with Eddie.'
'I'm really happy, of course, that Graeme is the principal of Cadillac, but that doesn’t mean I’m definitely linked with the team because, at the end of the day, the overall decision is taken by different people.'
'We’ve reduced both indoor and outdoor water use at Grand Prix Plaza, utilising several different methods. One of which is mechanical cooling on the building. You won’t find any evaporative cooling, so no water use there.'
Eddie Jordan, the former F1 team boss who has passed away at the age of 76, published his autobiography, "An Independent Man" in 2007. It's well worth a read:
RIP my friend. Condolences to each and every one of your lovely family. What a character. What a rock star. What a racer. So many drivers owe you so much, you gave us our chances and believed in us. 🥲 pic.twitter.com/7yexhsxC0h
I am deeply saddened to hear of Eddie’s passing. He was a larger than life character that changed the course of our sport for the better. He was a fantastic independent leader, who worked amongst giants of the sport.
Very sad to hear the news today about EJ. He had a passion for this game that was as inspiring as it was real….. and lots of fun along the way! He will be sorely missed. With sympathy and condolences to his family and many many friends. #RIPEddieJordan
RIP EJ. My boss and great friend seen here gently celebrating our win at the 1999 Italian GP. Arguably our greatest day in F1 pic.twitter.com/T6xU8zMOCo
Devastated to hear about the sad passing of my dear friend Eddie Jordan. We became buddies when I took the Jordan F1 baton into Force India F1. His high energy and effervescence will be missed. RIP Eddie.
Shocking news this morning that Eddie Jordan died. Bought my first racing car from him. EJ was the likable rogue – @F1 was better because of his daring….RIP my friend pic.twitter.com/jPankNzLnh
Saddened to hear of the passing of one of the sport's great characters. There was never a dull moment with Eddie Jordan around, here sharing the Hinckley Mota-Care Colt Lancer with the great, lamented "Whizzo" Williams, @jclelandracing and me at Snetterton in 1980 #fun#RIPEJ😪 pic.twitter.com/DIMRgU8Cx9
I don’t really come in here anymore, but listening to @mrjakehumphrey on @bbc5live honouring our pal Eddie Jordan so beautifully… I had to draw your attention to it. Pure emotion & pure love, sums up EJ really. Rest in peace. FTB
Lewis Hamilton claims the media have persistently ignored Max Verstappen getting angry and giving abuse to his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase over the years.
Zhou coincidently pointed out the exact factor that I’ve done, i.e., that different people ultimately have the final say on driver matters, which is the team’s upper management.
And, while they don’t have much hope of signing a local, I suspect a Chinese driver might be a step too far for a team so keen to portray itself as US American.
Zhou has shown himself to be a very reliable driver that is not much slower than Bottas. I still think he’d be a good fit for a Hypercar team. But as so often, drivers seem desperate to stay in the F1 sphere.
