Welcome to Saturday’s edition of the RaceFans round-up.

Comment of the day

Lewis Hamilton’s fine lap for sprint race pole position yesterday defied his doubters. So says one of them:

I’ve been one of his biggest critics, but that was impressive from Hamilton. To be in the mix on pace so early in the weekend is a complete turnaround from Australia.

Maybe McLaren blew it but that is on them. Lewis was strong throughout the session.

Horner told he should feel 'vulnerable' as Brown twists knife in F1 rival (The Mirror)

'You have got the Red Bull GmbH managing director (Oliver Mintzlaff) sitting there. And then you have got the Verstappens who don't seem to have a great relationship (with Horner), from the outside looking in. Adrian Newey, Rob Marshall and Jonathan Wheatley have all left and if I was in that position, I would feel vulnerable.'

Rivals in dark as Norris strikes gold with McLaren’s tyre alchemy (The Guardian)

'What’s quite strange is that they enjoy great warm-up, but also very low degradation,' the Red Bull team principal Christian Horner observed in Australia. 'Usually one comes at the expense of the other.''

Strategy set to play key role at Thermal Club IndyCar GP (Racer)

'A new wrinkle with tire usage was being discussed by IndyCar where the required running of both primary and alternate compounds — for a minimum of two laps each–would be adjusted. Although the proposal was tabled, IndyCar was considering a plan for Thermal where every driver would have needed to do two laps on the primary compound and use two sets of alternates — both for the same two-lap minimum — to throw a wild card into the event and force the use of the unfavoured alternates a second time at some point during the 65-lap contest.'

‘Something I really wanted last year and never came’ - Weug elated by long-awaited maiden F1 Academy pole (F1 Academy)

'Finishing almost five tenths clear of second-placed Doriane Pin, Weug was beaming after Qualifying and credited her team MP Motorsport’s effort, with team mates Alba Larsen and Joanne Ciconte finishing P3 and P6, respectively.'

  1. Zak Brown seems a genuinely affable guy, but he circles round Horner like a shark eyeing up its prey. Kind of scary. In a fun way.

    1. This behaviour shows exactly how affable he really is.

    2. I’d like to say my sympathies are with Horner, but that isn’t true.
