Pictures: Drivers ‘race’ two-seater Lego F1 cars before Miami Grand Prix

The Formula 1 drivers’ parade had a difference in Miami as the competitors toured the track in cars built partly from Lego.

The toy company, which has a sponsorship deal with F1, produced 10 cars styled on their toy models of the teams’ designs. Each had room for two, so the pairs of team mates were able to share the cockpit.

Only one of them got a steering wheel, of course. But the cars, running on real F1 tyres, were only capable of up to 20kph.

The cars took 22,000 hours to build and were shipped to Miami from Lego’s factory in Czechia. Each car was constructed from around 400,000 Lego bricks and weighed around 1,000 kilograms.

Absolutely the best drivers parade ever!!
    The drivers loved it.
    Absolutely the best idea ever.
    Lego! Fantastic!

    1. I had no idea this had happened until it was uploaded to YouTube. Most of us here complain about ‘gimmicks’ and Miami gets a lot of heat for being overpriced and a bit ‘soulless’. But I thought this was brilliant bit of fun. It wasn’t until I watched it the second time that I realised the cars bouncing up off the ground was because they were running over bits of Lego from collisions. Forcing each other off the track, going around the marshals.

The attention to detail, building them things must have taken forever, but good fun. Thanks to the people it that built them.

  2. The cars, running on real F1 tyres, were only capable of up to 20kph

If that made them overheat, Pirelli should be bricking it.

Interesting, too, to compare the current weight limit, and how long it would take to build a real F1 car…

  3. By far the best driver parade ever & I hope this way of conducting it won’t be a one-off thing.
Ultimately, Alpine won at least something this year & Max was the only one who fully respected track limits, even at the chicane.
Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Williams collison at the hairpin exit went unseen apart from its aftermath.

That explains the delays: Soooo many lego blocks to clear.

But the absolute highlight for me was seeing Infantilo and the new soccer cup being kissed up by Dementicali and his Royal Sadness Sulayem.

    2. Yeah, finally a driver parade that is fun again!

I wish I’d known that in advance; would have bought the most expensive tickets just for that.

    Not.

Do the pictures express who is each team’s No. 1 driver?

    1. Not necessarily.

      1. Oh dear…

  6. If they don’t plan on repeating it, I will happily offer to give any one of the LEGO cars a good home.

  7. Interesting to note they didn’t run on Lego tyres though I definitely remember reading a few years ago that Lego is technically the world’s largest tyre manufacturer by quantity…

    1. One has to wonder how that would turn out :-)

Can’t be much worse than Pirelli.

I’m a little surprised that McLaren didn’t cover their Lego car in flow vis to see if they could learn anything.

Good fun though. Still, if they run anything similar again there will probably be a cost cap and we’ll get Duplo cars instead.

  9. Any DNFs??

  10. Definitely the best driver’s parade I’ve ever seen. Brilliant funny stuff. More please.

  11. They should try peddle cars next 🏎️🏎️🏎️
