Sette Camara wins as De Vries extends points lead

Sergio Sette Camara claimed his first win of the the year in Formula 2, racing through from fourth on the grid to claim victory in the sprint race.

The DAMS driver took pole position by dint of finishing eighth in yesterday’s feature race, and held on to win despite fraying tyres at the end of the 28-lap race. He made amends for a disastrous performance on Saturday, when he tipped team mate Nicholas Latifi into a spin.

Sette Camara started superbly, threading his way through to take the lead courtesy of an error by ART’s Nyck de Vries made a mistake. Louis Deletraz was on course for second place until the Carlin driver suffered apparent brake failure and ended his race in the tyre wall at turn one. This triggered a late Safety Car period which promoted a few changes in the order, though a smart restart by Sette Camara kept him out of reach.

Once again tyre wear played a significant part in the race and drivers who managed it well were able to take advantage. Mick Schumacher impressed as he climbed from 18th place to fourth behind De Vries. He pressured the ART driver hard for the final podium position but a twitch of oversteer at the exit of turn three on the final lap blunted his late charge and secured a place on the rostrum for De Vries.

Yesterday’s winner Nobuharu Matsushita again ended the race in good shape, rising to sixth ahead of Latifi, Jordan King and final point-scorer Guanyu Zhou. Tatiana Calderon brought her car home 13th after stalling on the grid.

De Vries therefore extended his F3 title lead to 37 points over Latifi, who is now just eighth ahead of Sette Camara, Second place for Luca Ghiotto keeps him in touch with the points leaders. However a dreadful weekend for Jack Aitken, who came 18th and collected a penalty for a Safety Car infringement today, means he is increasingly adrift in fifth place.

    1. Fantastic races in both F2 and F3 today. If the today’s feeder races are anything to go by, the F1 race will probably be pretty boring because F1 always is.

    2. I was quite impressed by O’Ward this weekend, considering European tracks are unlike any he’s driven in the US, and also the Pirelli tyres are very difficult to learn. I’d say it’s harder to transition from Indy to Europe, than the other way round, so outqualifying both Maini and Tveter was impressive for me. First race he really struggled with tyres but was much better in the second, made some good moves and was running around P12 for a while. I think they should try to get him in F2 whenever he’s not driving in Indycar, or even when he is considering the Carlin in Indycar is incredibly uncompetitive (shown by how well Herta is doing compared to him, despite O’Ward winning the Indy Lights championship last year).

      1. @hugh11 I think you’re desperately trying to find positives here. Dead last in one race and even got overtaken by a guy (Mick) that started a minute behind. In today’s race he beat two guys that had technical issues (Aitken and Hubert) and two drivers that were in the car for the first time this year and aren’t really good to begin with (Maini and Tveter).
He was behind Calderon today, the only driver besides Raghunathan that hasn’t amassed a single point this season.

How one can be impressed with this, I have no idea.
