Hamilton still not ‘a hundred percent’ after German GP illness

RaceFans Round-up

In the round-up: Lewis Hamilton says he “slept literally the last three days” but is not up to full fitness for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

What they say

Hamilton said yesterday he hopes to be in better shape later this weekend:

I’m hoping to be a hundred percent by the weekend. I still feel I need a bit more rest but I’ve just been fighting off some sort of bug.

I definitely feel I’m in much better fighting shape for the weekend. I can’t tell you how good that feels. I’m looking forward to getting back in the car which is completely different to how I felt last Thursday and particularly Friday, getting in the car was not such a good feeling.

Comment of the day

Hybrid, 900bhp IndyCars in 2022? Bill is up for it:

No problem with Hybrids if it pushes them beyond 900bhp. Plus IndyCar’s mantra has been fast and loud so they will get even louder I expect, not quieter.

The bottom line is that the manufacturers want it, and Porsche was very close to joining recently but held off just for this reason. I suspect they may be interested again now.

Whatever they do the racing will remain best on the planet.

  1. Hamiliton still sick? He needs to dress accordingly and have a proper meal.

    1. I’m sure he’s being well taken care of.

  2. Keith doing what he does best: Defending his hero. Such a shameless Hamilton fanboy

  3. I remember two years ago F1 Youtube channel made a series with questions to drivers, one of them was “Did you ever simulate sickness to avoid media work?”
If my image and name was a brand, I would think about whether to allow some film-guys use it for free.

Very good point. It’s been pointed out before that – in the context of the Netflix documentary – they need Hamilton more than the other way around, so I’m sure that would have been a large factor in Liberty pressuring Mercedes into signing up for this year. Ditto for Ferrari, that brand in the documentary would be big, their drivers… eh.

      1. @phylyp Am I the only one that took his comment at face value. You are just a bunch of conspiracy theorists.

        1. @peartree – Did I say or support any conspiracy theory about Hamilton? I only commented about the value that Hamilton’s personal brand has, and that of Ferrari, so I’m not sure where you’re seeing the conspiracy theory.

The first series was a resounding success without any involvement from Hamilton or Ferrari…so that statement may not be 100% accurate.

        1. @geemac – Didn’t see your reply sooner, sorry. Fair enough, the first documentary did well even with their absence, but it’s been stated on RaceFans itself that Liberty were keen on getting both these big names in there, since they expect that to make an even greater impact in terms of viewership numbers.

        2. Indeed, it was actually far better without the so called best drivers!

    2. @Tim That was last year actually. The ‘grill the grid’ truth or false series.

  4. slept literally the last three days

It’s funny when people use the word ‘literally’ to make their point, but making it worse because it isn’t literally. This is a general remark, not to bash Hamilton.

    1. @matthijs – I share your angst. Sadly, the rampant misuse of literally (and not just for hyperbolic emphasis) has led to dictionaries loosening their definition of it as well: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/misuse-of-literally

It’s a losing battle. Embrace it and make your peace :-)

    2. The english language is a living language; and one of the main reasons its considered to be the international language. It changes all the time. You can rest assured that whatever concerns you have about the current usage, your great-grandparents are shaking their heads over the way you spoke the language, as did their great-grandparents about them. Get with the times.
Notwithstanding that you are allowed to punch anyone in the face who says or writes ‘End of’.

      1. The problem is it makes the word completely meaningless.

      2. @riptide My great-grandparents didn’t speak English ;) End of

    3. Yeah I agree it is a pet peeve of mine as well.

  5. Looking forward to see what Netflix will do… will they still show it (from a legal point they can cause the deal was signed n done) or will they do as Hamilton says?

The funny thing is that Mercedes only granted Netflix one race in the season to give them coverage and Mercedes chose Germany as that race!

    1. Looking forward to see what Netflix will do… will they still show it (from a legal point they can cause the deal was signed n done)

You’ve seen the contract that was signed? If not you have absolutely no idea what they can or cannot legally do.

  6. I didn’t see the Hamilton Netflix thing represented much, at least not on the sites I follow on my RSS feed. Most of them used your tweet and had it embedded in their article logo and all.

Only thing that seems suss is the Telegraph’s Oliver Brown has a similar quote at the end of his review article and that has been referenced, but they’re different enough for him to have told them the same thing one would think?

Renault taking penalties before Honda, says it all …

  7. Not sure if this was already linked somewhere, but meanwhile in Finland: Mika Salo makes another appearance in a music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fks5VaZSU0c
