Is the real problem with F1’s Tyre Performance not that fans don’t understand it, but that they don’t trust it?
The graphic is not confusing, its pretty easy to understand. Its whether the data is accurate is the issue.
Thats said, if they can get it with accurate data then I love the idea the graphic itself is pretty cool and I love charts and graphics in F1.

Is it really desirable to have these kinds of graphics in a reliable fashion though? Won’t this just be another step to kill unpredictability, which after all makes for the most entertaining races…?

I think i prefer not to know some things. we get told pretty much everything through the radio (even the coded messages are easy enough to interpret if you’ve been following the sport for long enough). one of the problems with revealing all the minutiae of the race is that there’s then nothing to talk about afterwards. surely the sport relies on its media coverage, so sites like this (and what’s left of the print media) are able to sustain our interest in the sport by revealing that, for example, hamilton was struggling with his tyres at some point in the race. but crucially, this happen after the event has finished. if you find everything out during the race (kind of impossible, but you get my point), it degrades the subsequent coverage of the sport, which is vital.
also, it’s just extra screen clutter. let the images speak for themselves.

Honestly, all we really need is the timings on the side, the rest of it can just go. I agree about the unpredictability, especially in terms of crucial pit stops, when all we know is that the delta is ‘around 21 seconds’, if the guy who just pitted from the lead is about 21 seconds behind the guy who inherited the lead, we don’t know exactly who will come out in front. The pit stop overtake chance has just completely ruined that. At least it seems to be somewhat accurate though, unlike the tyre wear and the overtake difficulty ones. I also really dislike how these unnecessary graphics just clunk up the screen, just give us the timings! And I guess some things like live wdc/wcc scores are alright.

I wish the different option compounds had no distinction, so all compounds are colored the same. Strategy is masked somewhat to the other teams as well as the viewers.

The problem I see with the tyre graphic is it’s seldom used. As far as I can tell it’s accurate, but does the wearing of the tyre relate to loss in performance? It doesn’t appear to, or at least not in a linear sense, so maybe the points at which yellow and red are used need to be change to reflect a loss in the tyres ability to perform.

@drycrust , I think the reason the tyres performance appears stable for so long is because the drivers are careful not to use them at the top of their range, eg. 25 laps at 90% is ultimately faster than 15 laps at 98% or 5 laps at 100%. So much for improving the show.

The main graphic that I would personally like to see is a track map with GPS data. This would allow us to evaluate traffic for the leaders, and follow midfield battles that are rarely televised.

I think this sort of thing would be better if you could get it as a free app or something. I don’t think the screen could really have much more on it without it looking way too cluttered. I would prefer the coverage to have far less in the way of graphics and have a free option of viewing them on a separate device. I personally find half the graphics already used quite a distraction from what is going on sometimes. To me they seem oversized even though I watch it on a small computer monitor rather than a TV.
Probably me just being picky! But I also think it would be good to at least have free access to something that shows the drivers on track positions.

The one difficulty with that is syncing it to your TV feed/stream… I used to use the live timing but it was always a few seconds ahead so had a tendency to spoil qualifying and overtakes

yea that is something i didn’t think about. I also notice that NowTV is way behind real time. Freeview was often as much as 10 or 15 seconds ahead when F1 was live on free to air TV in the UK. When It was available on both, i often flicked back to sky durign channel 4’s adverts, and it had quite some lag. Another reason why network streaming is overpriced given it is delayed compared to cable and free view.

As an aside, how fast is the tyre data updated? For example, could it tell us in near real time the state of a car’s tyres when there’s been a collision or a car has crashed into a barrier? If it could then that could be valuable to the TV race director and the race commentators bring the cameras on to cars that have been involved in an accident.

The ONLY graphics needed on an F1 race broadcast is the timing and race order down the side – and flag/sector status as and when it occurs up top.
Everything else is superfluous and belongs in those big computer strategy/simulation rooms where all the boffins are.

It was super cool to be watching the Baja1000 coverage, hearing mention of Jenson button, googling it, and finding out YES, that Jenson button!
It sucks he DNF’d, but that’s part of Baja Racing!
Rossi also had an interesting race with the ridge line !
I’d love to see more american offroad Racing coverage around here when f1 and offroad converge! Jenson Racing Baja was a complete surprise for me, and I follow both!
