Ferrari hasn’t changed concept with new car – Binotto

RaceFans Round-up

In the round-up: Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto says Ferrari hasn’t departed from the concept behind its previous F1 car with its new SF1000.

What they say

While the SF1000 appears longer and more steeply raked than its predecessor, Binotto said the basic thinking behind the car remains the same.

The rake is something we will try and test in Barcelona and, after, the races. As I said, this car, the starting point of the car has been the one of last year so we have not changed our concept. So I would say that wheelbase and the rake are pretty much similar.

Comment of the day

[smr2020test]Is cancelling the Chinese Grand Prix due to the Coronavirus a mistake given the danger it poses compare to other health concerns such as flu?

It’s not an overreaction. First of all flu kills a lot less of the infected people.

In 2018/2019 we had about 2,500 deaths on roughly 400,000 infected people in our country though it varies a bit every year. This Coronavirus has killed 1,000 in 42,000 infected people (more precise numbers will follow most likely later) Want to do the maths if it really gets global?

Sure, the global number of flu deaths is higher, cause more people get infected, but you fail to see potential catastrophe if no action is taken to contain this. It will result in countless deaths that can be avoided and for what? To race cars around a track?

  1. Hamilton’s helmet looks nice. So nice that I don’t miss the absence of yellow.

Is the purple a sign that that’s the sectors he’s looking for? :)

So – Vettel, Max and now Hamilton all have predominantly white helmets. I’m not complaining.

It may seem a cheap shot to suggest that Vettel – given his propensity to spin – nickname his car ‘Dizzy Lizzy’, but hey, I take my shots cheap.

And yes, I agree with the CotD by @passingisoverrated. Better safe than sorry. There’s are circumstances when risk-taking of this sort is acceptable, and a sporting event hardly meets that criteria.

Concept change wasn’t really worth it to Ferrari even if it was the case that the previous car was really bad. With the reg changes arriving so soon, designing a new car is just a waste of valuable resources.

    1. I’m a Lewis fan but I certainly hope Ferrari have got something right for 2020 and that we may see closer racing between Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull, and who knows even McLaren and Renault might get in on the act occasionally.

  3. That Glickenhaus vaporcar sure looks like what I’d imagine a 5th, 6th evolution of a XJ220 would look like

  4. Regarding COTD, I have been in the ‘it’s all a bit overblown’ camp. However, if I worked for an F1 team and was told I was off to Shanghai for 4/5 days I’d say ‘absolutely no flipping way’ or something along those lines.

So it’s easy for us armchair fans Europe to say, get on with it, but that is forgetting the human element to it – the team personnel are people like you and me, with families and a lot to lose. So no matter how small the risk is, I can’t blame anyone that doesn’t want to go to China as the risk is almost non-existent by staying put in Europe and is the best course of action for helping contain the worldwide spread of the virus.

Peace to all those so far affected, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. And yes, or the flu, or pneumonia etc etc

    1. @unicron2002 it’s not just for those working for the teams. The bigger problem is that getting 250k people in a single place over the course of a weekend is just asking for trouble. Also, it might have been a problem for the organisers to attract people to buy tickets and fill in the grandstands, and this could have turned bad on multiple levels – health, financial, image of F1, etc

      1. it would be absolutely irresponsible to hold the race. the virus is still poorly understood (we don’t yet know exactly how it is transmitted even) so we are at the containment phase, which means no large gatherings. this virus has deadly potential if certain circumstances play out. one estimate was that 1% of the infected population could die, which would obviously be utterly catastrophic if the spread remains unchecked. the earliest vaccines will likely not be ready until next year. however, we don’t know how the virus will behave or mutate in warmer weather, if there’s better containment etc.

it could all be an overreaction, but due to the potential risks, this is a sensible call. i wouldn’t be too surprised if big events in other countries get called off.

    2. As @frood19 and @gechichan mention, getting a huge amount of people to travel to one place in China right now, before we know the scope, have a clear picture of how easy it really spreads, by which means etc would be hugely irresponsible.

To your point, @unicron2002 it’s been already mentioned that just getting travel insurance in place for the team members etc would probably be prohibitive (since an employer has an obligation to their employees).

  5. Maybe a change of pace could be a good sign: call the chassis “Bob”. Good ol’ Bob racing to wins. Sounds right to me at least.

    1. For me, that name would be Steve. You get what you’re given with a Steve, no ego, just diligent and reliable.

  6. Ferrari is as conservative as always, small changes, small refinements. The RB is a pleasant surprise.

    1. @peartree Did you see the side-by-side comparison photos of the RB? The RB15 and RB16 are virtually identical.

      1. @f1osaurus at the time I wrote the comment there were very few pictures, now theres a few more so you can see what I meant.

        1. @peartree No that makes even less sense. If there were hardly any photo’s then how did you decide it was such a “pleasant surprise”?

Besides, it’s not true. Sites and people were posting “spot the difference” jokes already a day before you said that the new car is a “pleasant surprise”

          1. @f1osaurus you should all go to specsavers then, especially youtubers, going for clicks. Complete redesign of the nose, changing concept to the merc nose. Much more aggressive front sidepod intake, much tighter packaging.
You are all parrots, no personality, just repeat what others say.

          2. @peartree Lol you are hilarious. You are now going to pretend you asaw all that from Photo’s which you say weren’t available.

Nonsense like this just maker you look more stupid. You only dig a deeper hole. But then you dont see it because that ho fnboysim works.

          3. You’re sad, @f1osaurus , you don’t have a mind of your own.

          4. @peartree Dude you tried to be cool and pretentious and instead you simply made a dumb remark. Just live with instead of making yourself look even more dumb.

          5. @f1osaurus you don’t want to admit you’re wrong, so you replace reality with your own fantasy. Stop insulting yourself.
            Pathetic.

          6. @peartree Seriously stop trying to fool yourself.

You were the one with your pretentious remark that you could see how great the design is. RThen you had to admit that you didn’t get proper phofot’s and then you pretended that infor that cames days later proved that you were right.

            Are you really this dumb?

If you don’t wanrt to be called out for spouting nonsense … just stop posting nonsense. If for whatever reason you do post nonsense and get called out. Just own up and don’t make an even bigger fool out of yourself by pretending your nonsese made sense.
