The French Grand Prix will hold an “F1 Revival” featuring around 70 classic grand prix cars to mark two major anniversaries.

The 2020 F1 season marks 70 years since the world championship began and 50 years since Paul Ricard opened.

Cars from Ferrari, Renault, Cooper, Brabbham, March, Surtees, Lotus, Shadow, Tyrrell, McLaren, Arrows, Toleman, Larrousse, Ligier, Williams, Benetton, Prost, Toyota, Toro Rosso and Marussia are among those slated to appear. Around 40 of them will also compete on the track during the race weekend.

The cars have been chosen to represent the evolution in Formula 1 car design over the seven decades since the world championship began. Cars from the 1950s to 1980 will feature on one stage, and later cars on another. Visitors to the race will be able to get up close to the cars in a dedicated paddock area.

“This show will be a real moment of intergenerational sharing on the occasion of the celebration of the various anniversaries that will mark our grand prix,” said the French Grand Prix’s managing director Eric Boullier.

The race promoters have also confirmed details of the support races which will take place during the weekend. The Renault Clio Cup – which drew almost 50 entries last year – will return along with the Alpine Europa Cup.

    No Lola..No Life…Uninspiring list !! :-P

    1. @webtel, as an aside, you could possibly make an argument for Lola being represented via Larrousse, as Larrousse used a chassis built by Lola Cars from 1987 to 1991.

If the organisers chose to use the most successful car Larrousse used, which was the LC90, that was built around a Lola chassis – so, whilst not a works entry, it would represent Lola in that regard.

      1. Thanks for that nice tidbit about Larrousse using a Lola chassis anon !!
        Will keep an eye.

  2. It will probably be the most interesting part of the weekend…

    1. @wheel-nut No point in making definite conclusions at this point. The last two French GPs weren’t even as bad as people labeled them. Definitely no classics, but neither were they the worst ever. You never know beforehand, perhaps the next French GP turns out to be a cracker.

      1. Really… You definitely seemed to have missed last year. Oh wait.. You did not even recognized it as an formula one race. Probably thought you were watching sesame Street.

  3. They could go all in and let teams to use throwback liveries for that weekend. Nascar does this and it works so well. Imagine F1 cars with older liveries

    1. Considering that many past liveries were based on tobacco advertising, I’m not sure if that would be allowed.

      1. Porsche got away with running a Rothmans inspired livery on one of their cars at Le Mans in 2018…

        1. @geemac and Lotus ran a John Player Special tribute too

    2. Brilliant idea. Too brilliant, so it’ll never happen.

  4. Around 40 of them will also compete on the track during the race weekend.

The rest of them will be stuck in traffic on their way to the circuit, probably.

  5. I was excited until I got to the part about them being on stage. Not really what you go to a racetrack for. Still cool I suppose but a bit disappointing that they’re not getting ones to be fired up.

    1. Did you miss this bit then, Around 40 of them will also compete on the track during the race weekend.

  6. Yep! I definitely missed that bit! Well that is exciting again then!
