IndyCar has announced the cancellation of its double-header round in Detroit which had been set to open the season on May 30th after six earlier events were called off due to the pandemic.

The latest change to the calendar means the season is now due to begin at Texas Motor Speedway on June 6th, a race which originally would have marked the mid-way point in the 17-race schedule.

The loss of two further races from the schedule has prompted the championship organisers to add second rounds to some events. The Indianapolis grand prix course, Iowa oval and Laguna Seca circuit will now hold two rounds.

Laguna Seca, originally the season finale, has become a double-header event but will no longer close the championship. It will be followed by at least one further race on the road course at Indianapolis.

IndyCar also intends to find a slot at the end of the season for what should have been its season-opening race at St Petersburg, which was called off on the day practice began.

  1. Not going to happen.

    1. Maybe they mean October 2022. Just a week after the F1 2020 season begins.

Need to move out from USA for the season.

Look at racing internationally at circuits like Toronto, Mont Tremblant, Montreal, Motegi, Fuji, Suzuka, Yeongham, Autopolis, Shanghai, Surfers Paradise, Phillip Island, Estoril.

  2. Wonder if they’ll consider running the Indy road course in reverse (like they did for MotoGP) for the second race.
