The Formula 1 Safety Car will carry a new livery promoting the sport’s ‘#WeRaceAsOne’ initiative from this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes AMG GT-R, driven by Bernd Maylander, features the rainbow comprising the colours of F1’s 10 teams. ‘#WeRaceAsOne’, launched by F1 last week, is a dual-purpose campaign to recognise the worldwide struggle against the Covid-19 pandemic and show F1’s commitment to improving diversity within the sport. However ‘#WeRaceAsOne’ is just one of three campaigns being promoted on the official F1 Safety Car and Medical Car this year.
“In addition to the ‘WeRaceAsOne’ campaign, the call to ‘Drive Safely’ will be visible on the bonnet the Official FIA F1 Safety Car, addressing fans at home who are watching the race on TV or via live stream and reminding them to always drive in a careful and considerate way,” said Mercedes.
“Bernd Maylander’s ‘company car’ also uses the hashtag ‘#PurposeDriven’ to promote the FIA’s commitment to safety, sustainability, gender equality and diversity, and points out the FIA Action for Road Safety with mentions on the roof and tailgate of the car.”

I must admit to being confused by the use of the rainbow.
To me it’s marketing 101 – don’t use the symbol associated with another cause/group.
Whilst I applaud F1 for attempting to align itself with values that we all should have, I just can’t help thinking that the message will get lost in the rainbow.

Disagree
The Rainbow has long been the symbol of Pride, which in itself is a campaign for fairness and equality in diversity.
The recent explosion of Black Live Matter and awareness around racial inequality is pretty much the same thing (albeit with added violence, oppression and killings, obviously), so the fit to me is logical.
Combining it into a single, unified symbol of resistance against inequality is a good thing as far as I am concerned
obviously this is all a bit muddied by the #clapforcarers / covid-19 movement, but you get my point

Very poor choice of logo. Most of the world will perceive it like the embrace of LGBTQ community by F1.
Which of course is not a bad thing, but is very different to the actual message they wished to send.
They must change it before it is too late.

Well I guess they’re doing a great job of addressing the scourge of whataboutism!

Yes, all do… its just that not all are, or have been, treated fairly or equally
Anyone commenting “All lives matter” or “white lives matter” is either a closet racist or an enabler… Either way, that’s being part of the problem, not the solution

Surely there’s space to promote a few more bandwagons on the car?
How about a big ugly triangular fin on the back of it, with a picture of Greta Thunberg?

Why disrespect Greta in a topic which has nothing to do with her?

It’s all starting to get very silly. We get enough politics outside from sport. Sport is one of the few things that people can normally just enjoy for what it is. The more politics you bring in, the more people you’re going to lose.

F1’s always been one of the sports most significantly affected by politics. They just hid it relatively well for a period in the early 2000s.

I hope Bernd Mayländer doesn’t get arrested in Russia or Abu Dhabi!
