Fernando Alonso has been discharged from hospital after having surgery on his jaw which he injured in a cycling crash last week.
The two-times world champion, who is making his return to Formula 1 in 2021 following a two-year absence, was involved in collision with a car while training in Switzerland on Thursday. He received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital for surgery. The 39-year-old remained under observation over the weekend.
“After a period of 48 hours observation at hospital in Switzerland, Fernando Alonso has now been discharged to continue his recovery at home,” his Alpine F1 team confirmed in a statement.
“He will now have a short period of complete rest before progressively resuming training to undertake preparation for the start of the season.
“As always, thank you for your best wishes for Fernando’s recovery.”
Alonso told his social media followers last week he was feeling “okay” and looking forward to returning to racing.
Alpine, which competed in F1 as Renault last year, are yet to confirm details of when they will present their new car for the 2021 season. Pre-season testing is due to begin at the Bahrain International Circuit on March 12th.

Fred’s neck is famously strong (he used to break walnuts with it for a joke), I’m pretty sure he’ll have a swift recovery, on time for the training at Abu Dabhi. Reportedly he has a clean, single fracture, but has lost some teeth. Implants will be needed further on.

@balue some jaw fractures can be treated through the mouth (conversely some can’t), so he may not have a visible scar

I’d be more happy to see him do his overtaking on the track with resonable safety.
