In the round-up: Alpine sporting director Alan Permane does not expect Alpine to repeat their Hungarian Grand Prix success at next weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

In brief

Permane expects a “tough” race for Alpine at Spa

Alpine sporting director Alan Permane feels the high power demands of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit will not suit the team’s car.

“The next race is a tough one,” says Permane.

“It’s a long, quick track and we’re a bit nervous about that in the race. We don’t feel we have the same performance on those very long tracks – the high energy demand tracks.”

Alpine – then Renault – finished in fourth and fifth place during last year’s Belgian Grand Prix. The team currently sit fifth in the constructors’ championship on 73 points.

How to judge Mick Schumacher’s rookie season so far? Mayrton offers this assessment…

Bit puzzled what to expect from Schumacher tbh. Formula 2 champion kind of indicates a smooth transition into F1 in my expectations, rather than the teams and Ferraris positioning as ‘learning ground environment’. Then again the car must be horrible to drive. It’s not like Lewis or Max first car when they stepped up to F1 level. So overall, I will have to take his word for it. Looking forward to his future and seeing him in the mix upfront in one of those red cars.

No one ranked Schumacher above 12th place in the mid-season performance rankings because he’s such crash kid, and despite that he gets nods whilst Mazespin is loathed at any opportunity because of his past behaviour but also down on ideological reasons. But not everything Mick received was wreaths though, in the RaceFans driver rankings he was placed 18th, only ahead of Tsunoda and Mazepin. It felt like an insult on his performance overall, behind slower pay driver Latifi and other struggling drivers. But in reality it was only a poor way of ranking drivers by performance, mirroring too much the WDC standings and as such a failure to avoid taking into account their machinery.

  2. The pic of Max on the jet ski reminded me how much I despise those things. If I was emperor of the world I’d have them all destroyed.

    1. @frood19 What’s wrong with jet skis? I’ve never had any particular issue with their existence or use.

      1. Jet skis I can handle but these electric scooters wafting along the pavement amongst pedestrians or illegally using the roads are becoming a hazard. Imho.

      2. @jerejj ah, it’s mainly the noise. They just ruin it for everyone else. I’m sure it’s super fun to do but it’s just so inconsiderate. Also it messes up the sea bed and is really bad for certain ecosystems.

  3. Woah, yeah jet skis, man I hope to go back on one soon. Tons of fun. Scooters, isn’t it the other way round, illegal on pavements but ok on roads. But you can only use one if hired…! Bonkers law if you ask me..!

    1. Should have been a thread in @frood19 post.

  4. About Felipe Nasr. Is there any other driver whose first race result in F1 remained his best throughout a drivers career??

    1. Kevin Magnussen.

Mark Webber’s 1st result remained his best for almost 3.5 years till he scored his 1st podium in Monaco 2005.

Giuseppe Farina, Giancarlo Bagheti, a zillion drivers who only started once, half a zillion drivers who only started a few races …
But it’s true that Nasr is a good example for the much less catchy category of drivers who drove several seasons, but scored their best result on their debut.

  5. Re Alpine: Unless a crazy race happens…
Re Verstappen tweet: Well, I don’t want to jump in the thread.
Re Pourchaire tweet: Next up – driver’s license!

  6. Did I miss seeing the story of the Belgian circuit CEO on here? I would think that would be news?

  7. I think Renault’s lack of development on their engine for 2021 is going to bite them at Spa and Monza. What a foolish decision by the team to not introduce any engine upgrades this season. Not only are they risking losing out on a P5 finish this year, they’re going to start next season with an inferior or unreliable engine that will limit their track time in a new regulation era.

    1. Not to worry, F Alonso will whip out his bike an make up for it.
