Will F1’s rules revolution succeed? 20 questions for the 2022 season

Debates and Polls

The 2022 Formula 1 season looks like being the hardest to predict for years, perhaps decades.

Never mind the fact one slot in the calendar and one seat on the grid are yet to be filled with the first race just two weeks away. The regulations have had a once-in-a-generation rewrite which has already transformed the look of the field, may upturn the competitive order and will hopefully produce considerably better races than we enjoyed even during the spectacular 2021 world championship.

Are we heading into a season of multiple winners and close races? Or one-team domination and dreary processions?

It’s time to find out how well we can call the upcoming championship. Answer the 20 questions below on the new season and look out for responses from RaceFans contributors in the comments.

  1. I voted “Second Haas driver.” I loved her in junior formulae and she is sure to win at least a couple of races, so maybe optimist but hopefully not far off.

  2. 23 races is a joke. It’s too much. I think that 20 at max, let’s say 21, is enough. The reason they push this 23 race calendar is for races like Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Saudi Arabia.

    1. It does water down the importance of each race a little bit and is surely driven by greed and nothing more. On the other (more positive) side, I’d rather have too many than too few races, also any boring GP is one too many, whilst good ones I couldn’t have enough of. Quantity births quality sometimes, but last year we had an exciting championship and it won’t always be like that. I can’t imagine enjoying 23 races of 2019 season.
Another thing, this would be easier to swallow if they were adding interesting racing venues, not some street races that rather belong in Indycar than F1.

      1. I agree. I personally think 15 is a good number. It feels like there’s barely any time to build up excitement between rounds nowadays. And the off season seems extremely short – but perhaps that’s because I’m getting old and time moves faster :-(

      2. I agree 23 seems like a substantial stress on the teams. However, I don’t see it as much of a “watering down”, rather it does help reduce the significance of individual fluke results while still rewarding consistency. American Major League Baseball with 162 games in a season is an example of making individual games relatively meaningless.

    2. Just watch 20 then

    3. @apophisjj You don’t have to watch any race. No one is forcing you do to so.

      1. Absolutely, I can’t stand this mentality of “x amount of races are too many”, for me they’re never too many, it just means there’s less wait for the next, if they’re too many for them they shouldn’t watch.

    4. Not a single fan would complain at 23 or even 46 races a year, if it was knife edge racing with multiple drivers duelling it out for each win.

Back when I had more time and cared a lot more for F1, I would have watched 3 races each and every day of the week, instead I watched junior categories, Formula from around the world to satisfy the insatiable hunger motorsport. Even today I’ll travel into the regional area to catch a race when possible.

    5. 30 races per season
3 drivers & 3 half teams per constructor but only 2 can attend each race weekend & upto 20 race weekends per season – that way all teams get plenty of rest (except team bosses lol)

  3. 1. Will the series hit its target of holding a record 23 races on the 2022 F1 calendar? : Yes, Turkey will replace Russia
    2. Will one team find a significant advantage over its rivals and win each of the opening three races? : Not significant, but I expect Ferrari to be the team to beat
    3. By the end of the season, will F1’s new aerodynamic regulations be generally considered a success in terms of the improvement they’ve made to the quality of racing? : Yes
    4. Which team will finish ahead: Alpine or Aston Martin? : Aston Martin
    5. What will be the biggest political story during 2022? : A team will find some loophole in the regulations (like double diffuser) that the other teams will try to make it illegal
    6. How many different teams will win races over the course of the 2022 F1 season? : 5 (Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin)
    7. Who will be the first driver to retire from a race during 2022? : Lance Stroll
    8. What will Valtteri Bottas’s best result be? : 5th
    9. Will last year’s Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri gain a race seat for 2023? : Yes, probably in a backmarker team
    10. Will an 11th team be confirmed for an upcoming season? : No, but Andretti will eventually buy Haas’ place
    11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix? : Lando Norris
    12. Which drivers will leave F1 at the end of the year? : The teammate of Schumacher at Haas, if they choose someone weak like Fittipaldi, Latifi and Perez
    13. Which driver will suffer the most retirements during 2022? : Fernando Alonso
    14. Which team will make the biggest improvement on its 2021 points haul? : Aston Martin
    15. Will Red Bull keep Sergio Perez on for the 2023 season? : No, he will be replaced by Pierre Gasly
    16. Which driver will collect the most penalty points? : Sebastian Vettel
    17. Which drivers, if any, will fail to score any championship points? : The teammate of Schumacher at Haas, if they choose someone weak like Fittipaldi, again
    18. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? Brazil
    19. WCC? : Ferrari
    20. WDC? : Charles Leclerc

    1. Not a huge fan of Perez :-) You see him leave Red Bull and possibly Haas as well…

  4. Guessing time :)

    1 – Yes
2 – I expect one team to set the early pace (maybe Ferrari) but they won’t convert it into 3 wins.

4 – Aston will have the better car but Alpine will finish ahead due to Fernando.
5 – After what we’ve seen these past two years, who could possibly know… something completely unforeseen.
6 – Four: Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren.
    7 – Bottas
    8 – 6th
9 – Yes and he will drive in 2022.
    10 – No. Andretti won’t happen.

    20 – Verstappen

3: Likely it will be better. But we will see it sooner than the end of the season.
I think the other dimensions of the cars, like length, weight (and road relevancy ;)) are still being / will still be huge factors in the quality of formula racing. Mainly these two or three are factors, because of which I can not expect F2-like nimbleness, and I think I am right not to do so. The cars are just too big for some tracks. But if I think about this, imo not the tracks are the culprits. What is more hones, future proof, and environment friendly, when it comes to a racecar building competition? To (1) race well on the already existing many many venues of the world, or to (2) frequently build newer and newer wider and wider tracks? (Are straight line speed and laptimes this important? :( ) Imo the latter (2) is not viable just like the more and more complex aero was not viable as well, because the aero generated downforce just was not predictable enough in turbulent air. And because of other obvious limits, like the capabilities of tyres, and the limits of the human beings. There are many approaches instead of aero. To me the older cars are even a bit more beautiful than the recent ones.

I wonder, if these changes will be considered as a success, how much this approach will be exaggerated? Will they stop at this point, because entrants are a bit reluctant towards quick and frequent changes due to their high financial investment (they are looking for more predictability, instead of very frequently changing rules). Or will they be very satisfied and say: let’s come up with aero elements made of even less components (and some similar ideas).
Imo if this season will be very successful, the series could avoid being a very spec-series, by coming up with a much more permissive rule set at non-aero fields. This part of the tech rules could change more frequently as well (some technologies in and out sometimes to have an colorful and enginnering tasks-wise diverse environment), as once a succesfully implemented cost cap is in place, the entrants are risking a bit less financially, and more importantly they would not be trapped for seasons if they will not nail building a car against the acutal ruleset. Thus theoretically they would be less reluctant for changes, and imo F1 is very much about being an engineering competition, and many would enjoy this approach. (Definitely would be better then the “having a better law specialist competition”, and than the “we have more money competition” anyway :))

  14. 1. Will the series hit its target of holding a record 23 races on the 2022 F1 calendar?
Yes, it will, plenty of tracks to pick replacements from, but I don’t think any will be necessary from a covid-perspective.

    2. Will one team find a significant advantage over its rivals and win each of the opening three races?
Doubt it, I expect the new cars to be tricky enough to understand that the different tracks will play to different strengths of the various designs.

    3. By the end of the season, will F1’s new aerodynamic regulations be generally considered a success in terms of the improvement they’ve made to the quality of racing?
Yes, not like they could be much worse, at any rate.

    4. Which team will finish ahead: Alpine or Aston Martin?
Aston Martin, Alpine will begin a new 5-year-plan by the end of the year.

    5. What will be the biggest political story during 2022?
I mean, nothing’s going to top the cancellation of the entire country of Russia, so let’s hope the rest of the season is free of off-track stuff.

    6. How many different teams will win races over the course of the 2022 F1 season?
Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin (5)

    7. Who will be the first driver to retire from a race during 2022?
There’s only one rookie in the field, so for that reason, Zhou. Though it could be whoever takes the second Haas seat, if they’re inexperienced or a rookie.

    8. What will Valtteri Bottas’s best result be?
    9th.

    9. Will last year’s Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri gain a race seat for 2023?
Doubtful. Once you miss your chance and don’t go racing somewhere else to stay relevant, you’re not exactly strengthening your position. They need to get rid of the “Champion has to quit F2” rule, as there just aren’t enough seats in F1 to accommodate F2 drivers, or at least adapt it to allow one more F2 season if there’s no F1 seats available. Perhaps change it with a maximum number of seasons in F2 so the pay drivers that drive in F2 for 5 years or more are forced out instead of the good drivers.

    10. Will an 11th team be confirmed for an upcoming season?
I think Andretti will come into F1, but with what happened last week, I expect it to be from buying the Haas team, rather than from joining as a new entry.

    11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?
    Max Verstappen.

    12. Which drivers will leave F1 at the end of the year?
Bottas, Ocon, Vettel, and Tsunoda. (If Fittipaldi fills the Haas seat for entire season, him too.)

    13. Which driver will suffer the most retirements during 2022?
    Zhou

    14. Which team will make the biggest improvement on its 2021 points haul?
Ferrari, if we’re talking absolute numbers. Percentage wise, Aston Martin

    15. Will Red Bull keep Sergio Perez on for the 2023 season?
    Yes.

    16. Which driver will collect the most penalty points?
    Ocon

    17. Which drivers, if any, will fail to score any championship points?
With three sprints and 23 main races, given that the designs will probably shake the field up quite a bit from race to race as the teams will struggle to find the best set-up, I’m kind of hopeful all drivers can at least secure one point during the course of the season.

    18. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided?
    Final race.

    19. Who wins the WCC?
Honestly, this is a toss-up, I have the most faith in the driver pairing of LEC and SAI to score the most points as a team during the season. Whereas Red Bull might still struggle with inconsistency from Perez (though if Checo becomes more consistent, I wouldn’t be surprised if RBR is in contention for this). Merc will be third, as I feel Lewis doesn’t handle strong teammates that well and his performance might suffer if George comes through, but if he doesn’t or struggles at the first half of the season, then the same applies the other way around.

    20. Who wins the WDC?
Max Verstappen. He’s going to be most consistent winner out of the three top teams, as LEC and SAI will take wins from each other, and I expect the same to happen over at Mercedes. Whereas Perez will be a more solid number two to Verstappen.

  15. I couldn’t reset my password to vote to the polls, but I will comment anyway…

    1. Will the series hit its target of holding a record 23 races on the 2022 F1 calendar?
Yes, they will find a circuit or race somewhere twice.
    2. Will one team find a significant advantage over its rivals and win each of the opening three races?
A team will find a significant advantage but won’t show all of it, probably just running strong enough to be ahead. And probably will fail to win all the 3 first races in a row due to random events such as rain or SC/red flags.
    3. By the end of the season, will F1’s new aerodynamic regulations be generally considered a success in terms of the improvement they’ve made to the quality of racing?
They always say what they have done is a success, regardless. The race won’t improve as much as expected mainly by Pirelli tires overheating and ERS K deployment being a much stronger defensive tool than it is an attacking tool.
    4. Which team will finish ahead: Alpine or Aston Martin?
Aston Martin. Allpine will take a sad step back from last year.
    5. What will be the biggest political story during 2022?

    Not for 2023.
    11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix?

Aston Martin will probably double their 2021 score.

Yes, usually the second driver role is stable for about 3 or 4 years.
    16. Which driver will collect the most penalty points?
    Stroll.
    17. Which drivers, if any, will fail to score any championship points?
    Bottas, Zhou and Fitipaldi.

    Interlagos.

    Mercedes

Just for the fun of it, I decided to let my answers be decided by a random number generator. These are the results:

    1. Will the series hit its target of holding a record 23 races on the 2022 F1 calendar? No. In fact, only two races will be held. (That doesn’t sound ominous at all.)

    2. Will one team find a significant advantage over its rivals and win each of the opening three races? Yes, which is slightly surprising, given that only two races will be held.

    3. By the end of the season, will F1’s new aerodynamic regulations be generally considered a success in terms of the improvement they’ve made to the quality of racing? No. In fact, on a scale of 1 to 10, satisfaction with the new regulations will be a rather “meh” 4.

    4. Which team will finish ahead: Alpine or Aston Martin? Aston Martin.

    5. What will be the biggest political story during 2022? According to the random number generator, the biggest political story will be the number 42. (No idea what that means, but it sounds intriguing.)

    6. How many different teams will win races over the course of the 2022 F1 season? Only one. When I asked the random number generator which one, it told me, “7.” According to the official 2022 entry list, the seventh team is Aston Martin, so …

    7. Who will be the first driver to retire from a race during 2022? The random number generator said, “3,” so that could either mean Daniel Ricciardo (due to his driver number) or Max Verstappen (due to being listed third on the entry list).

    8. What will Valtteri Bottas’s best result be? 10th. So he will at least score a point. That’s some consolation, I suppose.

    9. Will last year’s Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri gain a race seat for 2023? The random number generator said, “1,” which I took to mean, “yes.” Good for him.

    10. Will an 11th team be confirmed for an upcoming season? Sadly, no.

    11. Who will win the Monaco Grand Prix? Random number generator said, “15,” and the 15th name on the entry list is Alexander Albon. His Monaco win is surprising for two reasons: First, as has already been established, the only race-winning team this year will be Aston Martin, and Albon is not currently employed by them. Second, only two races will be held, and Monaco is not among the first two races on the calendar.

    12. Which drivers will leave F1 at the end of the year? Two drivers will leave. According to the random number generator, those two drivers are “3” and “5,” which could either mean Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel (if we go by driver number) or Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc (if we go by position on the entry list). I guess maybe all four will leave, although I hope not.

    13. Which driver will suffer the most retirements during 2022? “5,” meaning either Sebastian Vettel or Charles Leclerc.

    14. Which team will make the biggest improvement on its 2021 points haul? AlphaTauri (the 6th team on the entry list), although how they will manage that in only two races is not exactly clear to me.

    15. Will Red Bull keep Sergio Perez on for the 2023 season? Yes. That’s probably for the better: If Max ends up leaving, it most likely won’t be wise to replace the other driver as well.

    16. Which driver will collect the most penalty points? “6.” Poor Latifi. Or, if we go by entry list position, poor Sainz.

    17. Which drivers, if any, will fail to score any championship points? Surprisingly, only three drivers will fail to score points. The three drivers are “2,” “7,” and “8.” Seeing as neither of those numbers are currently being used by an active driver, I figure that the numbers must refer to position on the entry list – meaning that Hamilton, Ricciardo, and Norris will all endure a pointless season. Wouldn’t have expected it to happen to those three.

    18. At which race will the drivers’ championship be decided? The penultimate round. Or in other words, the first round.

    19. Who will win the constructors championship? Alpine. Which is surprising, given that all (or rather, both) races will be won by Aston Martin.

    20. Who will win the drivers championship? “6.” So, either Latifi or Sainz. Being that neither one of them is an Aston Martin driver, this means that, for the first time in championship history, we will have a winless champion (unless, of course, one of them changes teams midseason).

All in all, this sounds moderately exciting, although it is obviously a bummer that the season will be so short. Still, though, I can hardly wait for it to begin.

I should add that Alpine winning the constructors’ championship is doubly surprising, seeing as Aston Martin is going to finish ahead of them. No idea how that is going to work, but I can’t wait to find out!

    2. Based on the results as a whole, it seems marginally more likely that the numbers denoted entry list positions rather than car numbers. Either way, perhaps Abu Dhabi was a sign as to how the future of F1 will look.

I suspect Stroll will win Bahrain, then F1 will be cancelled due to some kind of global disaster similar to the film ‘Greenland’, but will return for the Monaco GP because they pay the most and Albon will win that having been signed by Aston Martin after Vettel refused to race out of principle. Sainz will finish second and Alonso and Ocon third and fourth both times, allowing for the drivers and constructors championships. Alpha Tauri will get a few points, but will be disqualified from the 2021 season and so will get the biggest points improvement as a percentage (infinite, and Haas won’t score). And 42 is the answer to life, the universe and everything, so kind of a cop-out answer for the biggest political story.

        and Haas won’t score

But we already established that the only non-scorers will be Hamilton and the two McLaren drivers, @f1frog. Therefore, Haas must score some points – unless, of course, the team ends up getting disqualified, which is, I suppose, about as likely as the rest of my predictions, if not more so.

At any rate, thanks for going along with the ridiculous scenarios in my original comment :-) Your reply gave me a good chuckle, and I do believe you won the internet.
