In the round-up: Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto says he is “pessimistic” over the resolution to Formula 1’s budget cap row, which is expected tomorrow.
In brief
Binotto voices concerns over budget cap decision
The FIA’s five-day delay in issuing certificates of compliance to teams for their adherence to the budget cap shows “there are discussions and points that are not clear,” Binotto told Sky. “The FIA is contesting, the team is defending.”The FIA has not confirmed any team has exceeded the budget cap. While reports have claimed Red Bull exceeded the spending limit, the team has insisted it remained within last year’s $145 million cap.
“I’m a bit pessimistic, it could all melt like snow in the sun, but clarity and transparency will be important,” Binotto added.
Tsunoda ‘has to work on his discipline’ to lead AlphaTauri in 2023 – Tost
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost says Yuki Tsunoda “has to work a little bit on his discipline” ahead of becoming the team’s most experienced driver in 2023
The team confirmed yesterday Pierre Gasly will leave the team at the end of this season with Nyck de Vries joining as his replacement. Tost says Tsunoda – who will enter into his third year in F1 with the team in 2023 – still has work to do to take on the role of team leader.
“Yuki is making good steps but of course, he has to work a little bit on his discipline,” said Tost. “But I’m very confident that Yuki will come up with a really good performance.
“He showed us here in Suzuka, because he was out the first time with the Formula 1 car and he has fantastic natural speed, and all the other components we will get under control. Therefore, I’m convinced that Yuki will have a successful future, that next year together with Nyck, we will have a strong team.”
Vettel’s qualifying lap ‘made me sad to leave F1’
Sebastian Vettel admitted that his laps in qualifying at Suzuka that put him ninth on the grid for the Japanese Grand Prix left him feeling said to be leaving Formula 1.
Vettel secured his and Aston Martin’s first Q3 appearance at since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in June. With the four-time champion retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the season, Vettel admitted he would miss driving around the Suzuka circuit.
“It is so much more fun around here than at the other circuits,” Vettel said. “I have enjoyed it so much over the years – and I had a wonderful day today.
“We will see what we can do tomorrow, but I am just very happy about today. At the same time, I am a bit sad because it is the last time I will ever tackle this track in qualifying trim. Laps like these make me feel sad about leaving F1.”
Foyt keen to expand to third car with Kellett
AJ Foyt Racing is keen to expand to a three car team in IndyCar with Dalton Kellet for next season, but only if it is able to put together a “good programme”.
Foyt will run Santino Ferrucci and Indy Lights driver Benjamin Pederson in their two cars for the 2023 championship. However, team president Larry Foyt says that the team have ambitions to expand to a three car team with Dalton Kellett, who raced with Foyt this season.
“There’s a mutual desire to continue to work together,” Foyt said. “We both don’t want to do it unless it’s going to be a really good programme. We would have to certainly find some more people to make that happen.
“We’re not going to do anything unless it was really going to strengthen the team. We’re both on the same page on that.”

"It's not like everything's a total reset. I guess it is because you got two new drivers coming in. We have a lot of core pieces staying in place. We're just building on that. Comment of the day
Yesterday, AlphaTauri made it official that Nyck de Vries will race with them in 2023 and @sjaakfoo feels the 2019 Formula 2 champion and 2021 Formula E world champion has more than earned his opportunity in F1…
De Vries’ junior records and titles should have spoken for themselves years ago, honestly. It was a shame he was sidetracked and had to do Formula E for a few years, but somehow things have worked themselves out.
I am excited to see what he can do, AlphaTauri is one of the better places to be as a rookie. A patient team boss. They always have a car capable of fighting for positions in the midfield. And access to the Red Bull facilities and sim.

I do think some backroom deals are taking place but I choked when I read: “I’m a bit pessimistic, it could all melt like snow in the sun, but clarity and transparency will be important,” Binotto added.
Clarity and transparency coming from the team that reached a secret deal on their fuel pump chicanery.

I’m happy for RedBull to have a secret deal with the FIA, just like Ferrari. As long as they go to the back of the grid without hope of winning for two years, just like Ferrari.

He probably right to be pessimistic, when the FIA take their time it’s usually to get the wording of the get out of jail free statement just so.

People should be held responsible for speaking out of turn and making up stories. If this all turns out to be fine FIA needs to take disciplinary actions against those seeking the press to discredit others. It is not only bad sportsmanship but also incites hatred.
