Ferrari have confirmed their car for the 2023 Formula 1 season will be named the SF-23.

F1’s oldest team is the only one which has traditionally avoided the convention of incrementing its car names from year to year. Last year’s car was called the F1-75 to mark the company’s 75th anniversary.

Ferrari has restored the prefix ‘SF’, which was used for their car names between 2015 and 2021, ending with the SF21. Its predecessor was the SF1000, which was named in reference to the team contesting its 1,000th world championship race that year.

Last year’s F1-75 was the first Ferrari to win a race since the SF90, which raced in 2019. Other members of Ferrari’s ‘SF’ line of cars include the SF15-T, SF16-H, SF70H and SF71H, which raced between 2015 and 2018.

The team is seeking its first world championship title since winning the constructors’ title 15 years ago with the F2008.

Ferrari are due to reveal their latest car one week from today. Drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jnr have been retained for a third year together as team mates, while Frederic Vasseur has replaced Mattia Binotto as team principal.

  1. A year-reference for a change.

  2. Leave it to Ferrari to overcomplicate even the type naming of their chassis.

    1. @sjaakfoo I like that they come up with something different. Not everyone has to do the same thing.

      1. @keithcollantine Fair enough, I just wish they had some consistency so you can somewhat tell when a chassis was used. Like I don’t have to use Google to find out which year the Benetton B198 was used, I like that.

        1. Same year as Jordan 198, I imagine?

          1. @serg33 Yes, also from 1998.

  3. At least it’s not RB18.

  4. Call it “Red Nemesis” or “Prancing Death”.

    Then I might actually care.

  5. If Ferrari put just half the effort they typically put in naming into their race strategy, that would be enough.

    1. Ferrari Year End 2023: “we put so much effort in naming our car that we entirely forgot we had to race actually”.

    2. And all this time, I thought that they changed the car identifier sequence only whenever they changed Team Principals.?
The acid test will be the convention they use …. next year.
