The Ben Evans Column: Musings on Melbourne
Posted onAfter the months of anticipation the opening shots of 2007 were fired in what was a very ordinary Australian Grand Prix. There was little ‘racing’ to speak of and the front-of-field positions running the same form as they did at the end of 2006 – apart from Honda. Despite the absence of on-track excitement there … Continue reading The Ben Evans Column: Musings on Melbourne
Australian Grand Prix 2007 qualifying
Posted onKimi Raikkonen took a magnificent pole position on his debut for Ferrari with McLaren and BMW in close attendance. But the first qualifying session of the year threw up plenty of surprises. The bubble burst for Felipe Massa as an apparently self-inflicted car failure left him 16th. Heikki Kovalainen managed only 13th and Super Aguri … Continue reading Australian Grand Prix 2007 qualifying

Australian Grand Prix 2007 preview
Posted onWhat a tease! The first race of the year is by its very nature difficult to call because we have only the teams’ testing times to base our assumptions on. But what makes educated guessing even tougher is the uniqueness of the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne – quite unlike anything else on the calendar. … Continue reading Australian Grand Prix 2007 preview
F1 2007 Preview: Place your bets
Posted onFancy a flutter on the first race of the season? Or planning a punt on the championship winner at this early stage? F1 2007 Preview: Their last wins
Posted onEvery F1 driver – even those at the back of the grid – has been successful. But some have tasted the sweet nectar of victory more recently than others. The Ben Evans Column: The alternative 2007 preview
Posted onIn just a few days the 2007 motor-racing season will kick off with the Australian Grand Prix. And boy, does it promise to be a good year. I’m not talking about Ferrari’s radical design or the new McLaren line-up – because that has all been done to death. No I’m going to highlight some of … Continue reading The Ben Evans Column: The alternative 2007 preview
F1 2007 Preview: Helmets
Posted onTime was when drivers would go throughout their career without changing their helmets. These days F1 racers seem to spend every moment they’re out of the cockpit dreaming up a new style, or finding some way of cramming more adverts on them. Home races, one-off sponsor deals, minor football tournaments – everything has been used … Continue reading F1 2007 Preview: Helmets
Answer me this: Which manufacturers will quit?
Posted onThe disappearance of Cosworth from the 2007 entry list points to a very big change that has taken place in Formula One: all the teams are now run by a major car manufacturer, or dependant upon them for an engine supply. In some respects this is great: it proves that Formula One is the pinnacle … Continue reading Answer me this: Which manufacturers will quit?
F1 2007 Preview: Scuderia Toro Rosso
Posted onOne of the strangest stories of the off-season was how Gerhard Berger put Toro Rosso drivers Scott Speed on Vitantonio Liuzzi on the rack, refusing to confirm their race seats until the last minute. Berger’s determination to wring the most from his drivers, the team’s aggressive new car and Ferrari engine supply all indicated they’re … Continue reading F1 2007 Preview: Scuderia Toro Rosso

F1 2007 Preview: New best friends
Posted onIt’s highly unusual to see three top drivers make high-profile moves from one season to the next, but that is exactly what’s happened this year: Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Mark Webber have all defected. Why did they jump ship? What lead them to the teams they chose? And, most importantly of all, what are … Continue reading F1 2007 Preview: New best friends

F1 2007 preview: Williams

F1 2007 Preview: Red Bull
Posted onIt’s a big season for Red Bull. You can’t recruit the biggest-name car designer in F1, mate his creation to last season’s championship-winning engine, and not get results. Testing so far has suggested that the team are in for a difficult time to begin with, at least. But if they can get the car sorted … Continue reading F1 2007 Preview: Red Bull

2007 testing round-up 5
