History

AlphaTauri is named for owners Red Bull’s fashion label. The team was originally founded as Minardi by Giancarlo Minardi in 1979 and competed in F1 for 21 seasons before being bought by Red Bull and rebranded as Toro Rosso in 2006. The team continued to compete under this name until 2019, when it was once again rebranded as AlphaTauri.

At its core, AlphaTauri is a team designed to nurture young and inexperienced drivers, providing them with the opportunity to compete in lower categories of motorsport before moving up to F1. Many of the drivers who have competed for AlphaTauri (and its previous incarnations) have come through this programme, including world champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.

Originally Red Bull and Toro Rosso used chassis developed by Red Bull Technologies, but this practice ended after the 2009 season. In 2008 Sebastian Vettel scored the team’s first F1 win in the Italian Grand Prix.

As AlphaTauri, the team secured a shock victory in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, taking full advantage of a well-timed Red Flag to lead home Carlos Sainz Jnr’s McLaren for a stunning home win for the team. The team has also secured a handful of podium appearances across the years, including two podiums in 2019 for Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly in 2019.

The team has been led by team principal Franz Tost since Red Bull purchased the team. Technical director Jody Egginton leads the technical department, with Marco Perrone as head of sporting direction.
