Participant@DavidS completely agree. Also think when and how you get lucky makes the big difference. For example, Hamilton’s luck in Brazil 2008 had a huge impact – He won his 1st championship by a point. In 2009, Jenson Button lucked in by having a superior car to everyone else and ended up winning a championship because of it.
Similarly, Alonso has had one of the unluckiest moments of 2010, when the safety car period in Abu Dhabi messed up a certain championship for him. Although Alonso has been lucky a few races this year, none of them will matter if his engine blows in Sao Paulo and if he loses the championship because of it.

Alonso was lucky to get 67 points closer to Vettel in the first place. To then go and say Alonso was the unlucky one in the last race, makes no sense. The problem here is the double standard. Vettel is constantly labelled as being lucky to land the fastest car, but when Alonso is lucky ‘it’s part of the game’. Either we acknowledge both are ‘just lucky’ or we acknowledge both are great drivers.

I dont know how you got that from my previous statement. I’m saying both drivers have had their fair share of luck. Vettel got it when it counted the most (Abu Dhabi) and Fernando got it all season long.. as there is no other way the 3rd fastest car would be fighting for the championship.
Both are great drivers.. no doubt about it.

ParticipantThe second paragraph was more response to the topic.
However, there is no “when it counted most” in Formula One. Winning the first race of the season counts as much as winning the last race of the season, so you can’t “call it even” because it was in the last race. That’s like calling a hobo lucky for finding a tenner when a pigeon just crapped on your Ferrari.

ParticipantAlso, doesn’t what happened in today’s race make this thread void?

ParticipantFor one, how is having a lesser race bad luck?
And second, no, even if it was bad luck, one instance of bad luck doesn’t erase a long list of luck.
