Is there a practical reason F1 cars come to the grid before the formation lap?

A friend of mine has asked the question in the title. The idea of the formation and the recon laps before arriving on the grid both make sense, but it’s true that in theory cars could start the formation lap from the pits without much issue (aside from leaving their pit boxes in the correct order).

I guess the question is, outside of the rules and doing it because they always have, was there a practical reason for it to have been introduced in the first place? Personally I think the sorting out the order of the cars outside the pitlane is probably the most logical, but I wonder if anyone has a definite answer to this?
