With a couple of weeks to go I decided to try installing a second dish to point at Astra 19.2 to pick up RTL.
I have a Humax Foxsat HDR receiver (no sky box) with two tuners, so I bought a cheap DiSEqC switch and a 60cm dish.
The DiSEqC switch takes input from two dishes (the existing one at 28.2 and the new one at 19.2) then the output goes to Tuner 1 on the Humax box.
Pointed the dish at 19.2 using http://www.dishpointer.com/ then followed the instructions to access the secret Humax menu at http://www.astra2d.com/diseqc.html
Depending on the channel you want to watch the Diseqc switch automatically chooses the correct satellite. Now I have RTL and Eurosport Germany + about 300 other channels.
So for about £40 you can pickup RTL
Hopefully it help someone.

Something I forgot to mention is that the Diseqc switch lives outside near the dishes, so there’s no extra cabling to go in/out of the house. Just a couple of short pieces about a 1.5m each to link the two dishes to the switch.

It plays virtually every file format you could think of without making a fuss, and it has loads of useful options. It’s free and open source; you can get it at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.
