VDG has a press conference lined up today at 10 gmt +1.

The latest rumour is that VDG will be reserve driver at Sauber (surely Frijns’ adventure would have convinced him not to do that, but ah well).

Meanwhile, Caterham apparently will announce Kobayashi and Ericsson as their drivers today, while Frijns might get the reserve seat. That’s great news for Frijns, as Caterham have a habit of letting their test driver drive the car on Friday mornings.

EDIT| And as I was typing, the first paragraph was confirmed: https://www.racefans.net/2014/01/21/sauber-announce-van-der-garde-reserve-driver/

Yep – which means we’re now all holding our breath to see what the final team’s line-up will look like.

If, as I have been led to believe, they will announce it today, it’s especially good for me as I run a Fantasy F1 league, and I can get the guide finished off and sent out extra early this year! (Maybe even early enough to bring in some more teams, too!)

Caterham have just confirmed Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson as drivers for 2014. Reserves are Frijns and Rossi.

Di Resta is rumored to be up for a test and reserve role at Mercedes. Sam Bird rumored to walk around his apartment, worried.

Di Resta as reserve makes sense for Mercedes. If need be, he can step in and probably be just behind Hamilton/Rosberg, whereas Bird would have a job to get used to being in the F1 race, given a lack of testing mileage (no YDT last year etc.). Bird could still be a tester (along with Anthony Davidson) in the simulator of course.

If TV’s Anthony Davidson is still doing regular sim work for Mercedes, I’d be tempted to use him if Lewis falls over his dog or something. He’d know about the new engines and systems, be present in most of the F1 paddocks – or away racing hybrid Toyotas with even more regeneration and harvested energy than an F1 car.

That would be a good shout, but I imagine he is perceived to be too old now. It’s also a given that his short height and weight, along with hybrid experience, makes him ideal for this era of F1.. He’s always been unlucky (or stuck in Button’s shadow; Wheldon went to America to escape the same fate), and now that his perfect formula has come along he is simply the wrong side of 30..

If we had a customer McLaren team, as Prodrive almost was, I imagine we’d have seen drivers like Paffett, Davidson, Senna, Di Resta etc. getting a chance there and doing quite well. Davidson also helped to develop the Brawn BGP 001 if I’m not mistaken, which started out as the Super Aguri car for 2009, before they ran out of cash and it then went on to Honda…

This is my dream 2014 grid:

    Red Bull
    1. Jean-Eric Vergne
    2. Daniel Ricciardo

    Mercedes
    3. Nico Rosberg
    4. Timo Glock

    Ferrari
    5. Felipe Massa
    6. Nico Hulkenberg

    Lotus
    7. Heikki Kovalainen
    8. Charles Pic

    Mclaren
    9. Sergio Perez
    10. Romain Grosjean

    Force India
    11. Adrian Sutil
    12. Paul di Resta

    Sauber
    14. Esteban Gutierrez
    15. Jules Bianchi

    Toro Rosso
    16. Jaime Alguersuari
    17. Antonio Felix Da Costa

    Williams
    18. Jarno Trulli
    19. Davide Valsecchi

    Marussia
    20. Luiz Razia
    21. Felipe Nasr

    Caterham
    22. Vitaly Petrov
    23. Carlos Sainz Jr.

I know having no Seb, Lewis or Fernando seems a bit weird as well as replacing them with drivers like Glock, but that’s my vision of a perfect grid line-up!

I would like to change my dream 2014 grid just a little:

    Red Bull
    Daniel Ricciardo
    Jean-Eric Vergne

    Mercedes
    Nico Rosberg
    Timo Glock

    Ferrari
    Nico Hulkenberg
    Felipe Massa

    Lotus
    Heikki Kovalainen
    Charles Pic

    Mclaren
    Sergio Perez
    Romain Grosjean

    Force India
    Adrian Sutil
    Paul di Resta

    Sauber
    Jules Bianchi
    Jaime Alguesuari

    Toro Rosso
    David Valsecchi
    Antonio Felix Da Costa

    Williams
    Bruno Senna
    Esteban Gutierrez

    Marussia
    Luiz Razia
    Felipe Nasr

    Caterham
    Jarno Trulli
    Vitaly Petrov

I know having no Seb, Lewis, Kimi or Fernando is very weird but that’s how I always imagined my dream grid!

I wonder how the championship would go with this line-up?
