Force India junior driver Alfonso Celis is the first person to put his name to a seat for 2017, joining Fortec.

Lotus has announced its two drivers, retaining Rene Binder and adding Pietro Fittipaldi from Fortec.

A fourth driver has been confirmed: Matevos Isaakyan switches from SMP to AVF.

The first rookie driver for 2017 has been announced: Diego Menchaca forms an all-Mexican line-up at Fortec alongside Celis.

Egor Orudzhev returns with AVF, that’ll surely make him the title favourite.

Orudzhev’s 2016 team mate Aurelian Panis won’t be back however, he’s signed a deal to race in the World Touring Car Championship.

At the other end of the field Giuseppe Cipriani will be back for another season. He is revising the Il Barone Rampante name for his squad and says he will have a second driver as well.

This steady drip of press releases from the organisers has the feel of being choreographed, nonetheless it is encouraging to see more names appearing.

Today it’s another newcomer: Italian Damiano Fioravanti will drive for RP Motorsport. So that’s eight drivers in the field so far.

They’re keeping the announcements coming – ex-GP2 squad Durango (who briefly tried to enter F1 at one stage) will have a two-car team:

A third rookie joins the field: Konstantin Tereschenko is Teo Martin’s first confirmed driver.
