It could very well be the case of da Costa slapping Red Bull in the face, if he can win the event again. Although choices have been made already, and there’s nothing to do about it, it could spark some interest from other F1 teams.
@toiago I doubt winning Macau would increase da Costa’s chances of getting an F1 seat next year too significantly. Edoardo Mortara also won consecutive Macau GPs, and he’s trundling about in a tin-top in Germany now. Nothing against DTM, but…
It’s a strange swap, as Felix da Costa won last year, while Kvyat hasn’t taken part in the race yet. You could say that it would benefit Kvyat more to be in the race, so I’m a bit puzzled as to why Felix da Costa is there. Maybe it’s a way of Marko saying, justify to me your place in the squad for next year, perhaps to give Sainz Jr some competition in FR 3.5. I’m sure it’ll still be one of these two replacing Vergne in 2015, unless Marko is unhappy with Sainz’s lack of results and picks someone from outside the Junior team!
Jaafar is making his way up the ladder slowly, trying to maximise himself at every level, as he has secure Petronas backing. He did indeed dominate the British F3 race he attended this year. If he can do better in FR 3.5 next year (likely) and stay involved with the Mercedes GP team (as a development driver) then I would say that’s another successful year for Jaafar. His aim for the future is still a few years down the line. I’m sure Fauzy had a similar ambition, and he seemed to disappear after taking part in an FP1 and having a successful final junior ladder season?
Also, I can’t help but agree with Jarno Trulli, that with a more financially healthy F1 mid-rear grid, Mortara would have got slightly more than 1 day of a YDT to try F1. Perhaps a year as a test driver, or a year at Minardi in days past?
It’s such a shame Mortara didn’t get a proper chance to show himself in F1. He seemed very talented, and he actually has been quite good in DTM, havin won some races already. As for Kvyat not participating this year, must have to be because of him focusing on getting acquainted with F1 as much and as quick as possible. He’ll make FP1 appearences at Austin and Interlagos, and also a test with a Toro Rosso 2011 car, at least is what I’ve read somewhere.
F3 driver, Aussie Mitchell Gilbert tweeted today to say he will not be participating at Macau due to shortage of funds. He was set to take part for Mucke Motorsport, alongside Felix Rosenqvist and Yuhi Sekiguchi. Mucke are yet to make an official announcement as to who wil replace Gilbert.
Dutch driver Dennis van de Laar, who raced in the European F3 championship with van Amersfoort Racing, will be racing at the Macau Grand Prix, with the Mucke Motorsport team, replacing Mitchell Gilbert.

Thanks for sharing Keith! This year we have one hell of a race on our hands. Probably the most talented field of the last 5 to 7 years.The last time I saw a field like this was in the Rosberg, Hamilton, Vettel generation. Lets just hope the weather picks up. Not looking too good today, but weather reports are optimistic for both weekends.

Nice one, I was a little worried after he was 8th in the provisional standings.
Surprised to see Jafaar so high up and Sainz so far down. The Spaniard keeps his erratic style going.
@npf1 Yeah, and I wonder whether Red Bull will retain Sainz at all after his shenanigans at Abu Dhabi and stuff.
Looking forward to the race, but we have no coverage here in Australia. Does anybody know of a reliable live stream that I can use?
When does race 1 (or the qualy race) start? I believe it’s tomorrow at 7am Central European time, but I’m not sure.

I still reckon Sainz is going through the yips at the moment, he beat Kvyat when RB took both of them on (F.Renault), indicating he was at least equal then (and its fair to say until comparatively recently as well), but he’s had a little downturn recently. If he’s grown recently (to full adult size) that could back it up. He looks a lot younger than Kvyat at the moment anyway IMO!
Also I was surprised Rosenqvist said he ‘backed off a little’ at the end of the lap, thinking he had done enough for pole, as there’s no room to do that surely when the margins are so slight (unless you might put it in the barrier), and it seems Lynn would be on pole if Auer didn’t stall before the last run, depriving him of a good tow into T1. I kinda expected Marciello to be on pole… Felix da Costa and Blomqvist are close, maybe RB are evaluating both against each other (and the pole guys).
