Interesting perspective from Franchtti – just how much quicker are these new cars going to be?

Oh snap… I didn’t even think about that. Though the other day I was wondering when Indy Car will give in and allow power steering. It used to seem like a neat machismo bragging point for the series, but the wrist injuries just don’t make it worth it anymore to me. Time for them to get with the times.

As I understand it, some teams chose to change steering components in 2013-14 to reduce impact forces transmitted to the driver. I wouldn’t be against some sort of assisted steering at this stage, if the downforce numbers are as high as some observers have suggested.

Sounds a bit early 1980s F1 with massive downforce (from ground effect aero in that case) and no power steering – I think I’ve heard Alan Jones comment on the huge strength that was required to drive those cars.

The real difference with IndyCar though is the oval running – particularly on short ovals, drivers are going to be subjected to huge G-forces almost constantly, and it will require a lot of strength. Then, when it goes wrong, it goes wrong hard.

I usually don’t like to talk about this because it’s generally not as much of an issue in modern motorsports, however I think it’s relevant here: how will women fare in IndyCar now? Simona Di Silvestro is racing again this year, so I guess we can see how she goes, but these cars will require a lot of strength and will put her at a disadvantage because it’s a fact that women naturally aren’t as strong as men. I’m sure she’ll be doing a lot of training to build up her strength, because she’ll need it.

Tracks with a lot of elevation changes\sweeping turns like Barber will be tougher than usual, although up to 5G is possible at Iowa because of higher cornering speeds and the banking.

She’s known as The Iron Maiden. She’s not exactly a weakling by her track record of gutting through injuries…

Didn’t know that, but it sounds like she’s up to the job.

In any case I wasn’t suggesting she was a weakling, it’s just that the usual “strength isn’t an issue in modern motorsports” doesn’t really apply in Indycar, especially with the new aero.

I think she’ll be fine provided she gets some testing in before the start of the season, although being out of an Indycar so long will be a disadvantage.

If anything I think her strength marks her out as the female that could drive in F1. She can perform to her optimum (as shown in Indycar), while other females might lose some performance (e.g. Danica on road/street) when it becomes an issue in high G cars. Visser doesn’t seem to lose performance either, so we might have 2 :)

Hoping we see plenty of this during the season – different drivers within teams using different elements of the aero kits:
