IndyCar’s long path to any kind of serious popularity remains its greatest challenge, six years on from reunification.

The condensing of the 2014 schedule into an intense burst of races across five months was partly done to increase its impact, and this note in press release is a sign it may have had a positive effect.

It’s a clear sign the actual figures are still uncomfortably low that they are only mentioned in relative terms, not whole number of viewers. But IndyCar will surely be grateful for any kind of growth in his area, and for the sake of the series I hope it can be sustained.

Toronto race is most-watched since 2011: Mike Conway’s victory in Race 2 was the most-watched Verizon IndyCar Series race telecast on NBCSN since the 2011 Grand Prix of Baltimore.

Through eight races on NBCSN, viewership is up 46 percent from the 2013 average viewership over eight races.

“IndyCar is definitely on the upswing, whether it’s ratings or putting buns in the seats,” [Scott] Dixon said. “(This season) has been up and down with so many different drivers winning and even a rookie winning. It’s strong for the sport and fun for the fans to see different cars at the front. The competition is the deepest it’s ever been. I think it’s exciting.”

The loss of the network (ABC) deal in 2008 (that used to cover the whole schedule) didn’t help. F1 gets low ratings on NBCSN as well, only NHL hockey tends to draw consistently well on that channel.

The ratings for ABC coverage have been good, even Indy 500 qualifying had north of 1 million viewers.

Another positive report, still light on the firm details though:

Viewership of NBCSN’s telecast of the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on Aug. 3 nearly doubled over the 2013 telecast, the exclusive cable network of IndyCar announced.

Overall, viewership through the nine Verizon IndyCar Series races NBCSN is up 38 percent over the same number of races in 2013.
