ParticipantWhile watching the World Cup today, (And seeing my Portugal get beaten badly), I started to wonder what the F1 grid would look like if the teams were determined by nationality. I came up with a few of them while watching the snooze fest that was Iran v Nigeria:
Germany- Sebastian Vettel & Nico Rosberg
Finland- Kimi Raikkonen & Valteri Bottas
England- Lewis Hamilton & Jensen Button
Australia- Daniel Ricciardo & Mark Webber
Spain- Fernando Alonso & Carlos Sainz Jr.
France- Jean-Eric Vergne & Jules Bianchi
Mexico- Sergio Perez & Esteban Gutiérrez
Brazil- Felipe Massa & Felipe Nasr
Switzerland- Romain Grosjean & Fabio Leimer
USA- Conor Daly & Alexander Rossi
Russia- Danill Kvyat & Vitaly PetrovI know I added some guys who aren’t in F1 but there are still some solid teams in there. Which ones do you like? Would you make any changes?

ParticipantHere is a few more…
Netherlands – Giedo van der Garde & Daniël de Jong
Japan – Kamui Kobayashi & Takuma Sato
Sweden – Marcus Ericsson & Jimmy Eriksson
Venezuela: Pastor Maldonado & Julián Lealalso… replace Bianchi with Grosjean, we saw his pace at the end of last season..

ParticipantI wonder if Alguersuari would replace Sainz Jr. Buemi could represent Switzerland.. perhaps Simona soon. I think that Netherlands would rather have Robin Frijns than Daniel de Jong as well. Leal is Columbian, so he could represent with Montoya. Cecotto and Maldonado would be a formidable crash team…. and once Kimi retires, I’d put Rosberg for Finland, and Hulkenberg for Germany! Hulk won the A1 GP for Germany, which followed this concept…
Scotland – Paul di Resta, Susie Wolff ;)
Belgium – Stoffel Vandoorne, Jerome D’Ambrosio
New Zealand – Mitch Evans, Richie Stanaway
Monaco – Stefano Coletti, Stephane Richelmi
Austria – Rene Binder, Lucas Auer18th June 2014, 19:57 at 7:57 pm #263315Iestyn Davies
ParticipantAlso I reckon that Sweden might take Felix Rosenqvist or Tom Blomqvist over Jimmy Eriksson.
Denmark – Kevin Magnussen, Dennis Lind
Indonesia – Rio Haryanto, Sean GelaelDepends how many teams you want to have… strangely there’s no Italy team (Ferrari). Ferrari are seeking to bring through Italian youngsters now like Marciello and Fuoco. Bianchi I feel is an honorary Italian in their squad, like Massa was (with Italian heritage).
For 13, I guess I would pick England, Germany, Finland, France, Brazil, Spain, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Netherlands, Switzerland, USA. Reserves: Scotland, Sweden, Belgium.. New Zealand will be strong in a few years. You would be swapping them in and out based on driver performance, so when Scotland lost Coulthard they would drop and USA would step in with Rossi & Daly getting stronger in GP2.

I would reckon the best way to determine a winner would be through the current Speedway GP format, just with an extra (6th) round. A 2 Lap race with a Driver-Change in the pits after the first lap! Someone give Jean Todt a call :p

ParticipantI’d love to see this sort of competition but surely Denmark would take Tom Kristensen, Austria would want Alex Wurz and perhaps Villeneuve would lose out to Hinchcliffe for Canada? And finally would Marcel Fassler beat Leimer to a Switzerland spot? I think the WEC guys and Hinch from Indy could show how good they are!

Participant@pezlo2013 Holland is NED (NEDerland), Germany is DEUtschland (though GER should work just fine).
And what about counting Great Britain as 1 (and Ireland as another 1 as well)?I think it should be a race (not rally), but also something that takes place on a track with “road” surfaces and “off-road” surfaces.
Have Alex Lifeson, Jon Anderson, Richard Stallman, Linux Torvalds, and Warren Buffet design the track and have them led by @keithcollantine (It might turn out better than Tilkedromes, who knows?).
Participants (copying @pezlo2013’s list and replacing some drivers):
Australia – AUS – Daniel RICCIARDO and Mark WEBBER
Belgium – BEL – Stoffel VANDOORNE and Vanina ICKX
Brazil – BRA – Felipe MASSA and Felipe NASR
Canada – CAN – Jacques VILLENEUVE and Robert WICKENS
The Middle Kingdom :) – PRC – MA Qinghua and Ho-Pin TUNG

ParticipantI think you are spot on @mathers… a bit odd that I didn’t think of them after just watching the Le Mans 24 hrs! I was stuck thinking of single seaters.. Villeneuve might have more pulling power than Hinch, while Fassler doesn’t seem to have any single seater experience.. e.g. Lotterer, Treluyer and Duval are reguarly at the front in Japanese F3000.
Hehe Middle Kingdom.. who would be in the Ireland team? Adam Carroll I think is from Northern Ireland?

ParticipantI’ve gone for a diverse grid. I feel some drivers who are at the top of other championships, namely sportscars or Indycars, would be better representatives for their nations than drivers who are merely in F1 feeder series. My grid would be like so:
Australia – Daniel Ricciardo & Will Power
Belgium – Stoffel Vandoorne & Jerome D’Ambrosio
Brazil – Felipe Massa & Helio Castroneves
Canada – James Hinchcliffe & Bruno Spengler
Colombia – Juan Pablo Montoya & Carlos Munoz
Denmark – Kevin Magnussen & Tom Kristensen
Finland – Kimi Raikkonen & Valterri Bottas
France – Loic Duval & Romain Grosjean
Germany – Sebastian Vettel & Andre Lotterer
Great Britain – Lewis Hamilton & Jenson Button
India – Narain Karthikeyan & Karun Chandhok
Italy – Giancarlo Fisichella & Gianmaria Bruni
Japan – Kamui Kobayashi & Takuma Sato
Mexico – Sergio Perez & Memo Rojas
Netherlands – Jeroen Bleekemolen & Robin Frijns
New Zealand – Mitch Evans & Scott Dixon
Russia – Daniil Kvyat & Vitaly Petrov
Spain – Fernando Alonso & Carlos Sainz Jr.
Sweden – Marcus Ericsson & Felix Rosenqvist
Switzerland – Sebastian Buemi & Marcel Fassler
United States – Kyle Busch & Ryan Hunter-Reay
Venezuela – Pastor Maldonado & Gustavo Yacaman19th June 2014, 23:02 at 11:02 pm #263515Theo Parkinson
ParticipantI always wanted something like this to happen. If it did, I wouldn’t want a drivers prize and I would prefer it to be completely team based. Possibly a championship with driver changes required at 50% distance of each race. Or maybe a tournament, with 2 teams going head to head in a series of heats (qualifying in fast single seaters, an off road rally qualifying, 1v1 3 lap sprint race in touring cars, and a 1v1 25% grand prix distance race with pitstops only for repair). Each driver has to do 2 events. In the group stages if there is a tie both teams get a point, but in the knockout there is a qualifying session that goes like a penalty shootout. Best of 5 flying laps wins.

ParticipantI’ve just realised my idea above basically amounts to rallycross. Having a single-seater race it would be nice, though.
Oh, we’ve got the ROC, haven’t we……? My bad!
A single-seater comparable-to-F1 world cup, though, an A1 GP w ith decent cars, and perhaps without being a spec series (which seems to be the idea behind the creator of this thread), would be nice……
