Hello everyone and welcome to F1 Fanatic Live for the 2018 Daytona 24 Hours!
What a cracking field we have this year. In addition to current F1 stars Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll there are many other well-known former F1 names such as Juan Pablo Montoya, Felipe Nasr, Paul Di Resta, Bruno Senna and Jan Magnussen. Plus some of the cream of the IndyCar field including Scott Dixon, Simon Pagenaud, Helio Castroneves, Graham Rahal and Ryan Hunter-Reay. And that’s not to mention all the top sports car stars too. If you need a spotters’ guide there’s a great one here:
Well I’m amazed there isn’t a UK broadcaster showing it properly. I’d’ve thought there’d be enough interest to justify it. But Eurosport are only showing a couple of hours live and that’s it.
The Quick links menu above has been updated to include the live video and live timing links for those who may need them. (Refresh the page if you can’t see them.)
Alonso’s car not looking great at the end of stints but they seem to be stretching fuel longer than several of their rivals. Not really enough to make up for the pace deficit though.
Yeah they usually do two hours or so each. I think the only time I’ve spent that long continuously on the microphone was during a red-flag period in a Formula Renault 3.5 race.
Both sometimes. On the Le Mans they swap one at a time and normally have a break for 4 ish hours. Not sure for the Daytona (1st time watching/listening)
question.. one that I’ve always puzzled about. Any time I’ve watched an endurance race there seems to be a disconnect between commentary, TV direction, and the race; as if they’re all happening asynchronously. Only at the finish did they ever seem to synchronize. I don’t see how a non-fan could spend over two minutes watching.
Have to wonder what it was like before they put the chicane in. I do find this a rather odd track. ‘Rovals’ are always a bit funny, and this is such a short track to have a long race like this on.
It’s the only roval I like this one! i think it’s fantastic that they have such a variety of cars and classes on such a short track. On iRacing’s the 24 hours are always very very fun, except when the servers crash
I’ve always thought the inner track on ovals to be pretty poor. Not a fan of this format tbo, but its a smashing driver line up and well, its cool cars racing so…
I’ve had the exact same though, invisiblekid! But I really enjoy those prototypes on the banked corners. It’s a very futuristic look, for lack of a better word.
It’s so cool to watch a series you never watch and recognize half of the field of drivers. It’s almost feels like the Masters Karting Paris Bercy legendary events held in the 1990s. Who remembers those?
I’m in Chicago and currently watching both broadcasts. Have fox one one tv and the international broadcast on the other with a vpn. Honestly haven’t heard much about Alonso from either.
This is set up rather interestingly. Clearly a few of the prototypes are running longer stints, notably the United Autosport cars, could pay off for them with a few well-timed Safety Cars. Great standard of driving so far as well given the traffic. Let’s see what the night brings…
Perhaps but that’s quite a gamble if it depends upon a full course caution or pace car laps. Weather should not play a factor during the overnight. Chances for a crash increase with the loss of sunlight but so far, the race has been relatively incident-free.
charliex, caution periods or pace car laps do not compromise you in a 24h race, even more so on such a short track, because at some point you’re not seconds but laps apart from your direct competition
Last year, there was a nasty accident involving a DPI car and two slower cars which spread debris all over the track. 10 laps under full course yellow for the clean-up.
I won’t be surprised when there is a huge crash on the banking before this race is over. That is at least 5 or 6 right rear punctures among the different prototypes. Continental has made changes to the LMP tires for this year, and it looks like they didn’t get it right for Daytona.
Shame to see the Alonso/Norris/Hanson car lost so much time overnight, particularly as their team mates Senna/Di Resta/De Sadeleer/Owen are running third thanks to their longer stints.
Tough luck for the Stroll/Rosenqvist/Juncadella/Frijns car too. Looks like it’s going to be one of the two Cadillacs up front unless the widely-anticipated rain later on mixes things up…
Ah more problems for the Alonso/Norris/Hanson car. Got to mention what a good job Senna/Owen/Di Resta/De Sadeleer are doing in the sister car though – if that was there team mates’ car we’d be hearing a lot more about their position I can’t help but think.
And there goes the battle for the lead as the Conway/Nasr/Curran/Middleton Whelen Engineering Cadillac hits trouble and loses three laps. Sounds like it was overheating?
Van Der Zande and Taylor Tweeting about the same tyre problems Hunter-Reay mentioned earlier which put the pole sitting car out. “We are always well within the recommended parameters and we have had multiple tire failures” lays the blame pretty clearly at Continental’s feet.
Haven’t watched the whole thing, but I’ve only seen one caution period – only 4 in total! Greenest Daytona 24 in a long time, and a proper, long-game sportscar race. Hope I won’t jinx it by sending this out.
Watching Daytona onboards I realized that Vettel should race the 24hour races. Would be great practice for overtaking and NOT shouting blue flags all the time :)
I like how the timing screen has Habsburg down as ‘Habsburg-Lothringen’. They should go for the full name which is (deep breath): Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michael Otto Antal Bahnam Leonard Habsburg-Lothringen!
Pace from the leading Caddy looks pretty poor at the moment. They still have a few laps in hand, but at this rate it might not be enough. Another grandstand finish at Daytona?
They’re losing up to four seconds per lap, at that rate they’d still have a comfortably margin but not the three laps they’ve got at the moment. It could be very conservative pace management but if the pace drops off much more then it would start to look serious.
The leader is lapping slower than the GTLMs at the moment. Conway consistently 6, 7, 8 seconds quicker. Don’t think it’s a foregobe conclusion just yet… Conway will be back on lead lap soon
Think they’re all done for pit stops now. Albuquerque picking up his pace a little, Middleton not as quick as Conway was. Think we need something big to happen for a late lead change
Middleton could even let the leader lap him back, so he doesn’t need to do the extra lap and just finish behind him. If the gap to the 3rd car is a safe one.
Thanks very much! It looked like being a muich more exciting race after the first eight hoursa or so but unfortunately it didn’t pan out that way. The standard of driving was really good though, impressed there were so few cautions, and the distance record was smashed.
The Weekend Racing Wrap is up, including highlights from Rally Monte-Carlo and notes on the junior categories racing this weekend, including a breakthrough win for another Schumacher…

For those of you not watching in the USA you can find a live stream of the race at IMSA.tv
It’s live on Youtube as well.
That just looks like a pirate of the official feed.
Unbelievable – the #58 Wright Motorsport Porsche (Long, Nielsen, Renauer, Jaminet) has had contact before the green flag and pits.
I’m here. Was hoping for a standing start. Seems a very short lap.
Love how they have a stream online
And it’s not the ‘Alonso show’ so far either.
Was supporting Fernando. But I’ve just heard there is a Jackie Chan car may have missed it.
There are two of them. Numbers 37 & 78.
Think the 37 is Stroll, Frijns, Rosenqvist and Juncadella, and the 38 is Felix da Costa, Alex Brundle, Habsburg and someone else (not sure who)
Great pass by Nasr on Castroneves for second.
Hello, my fellow hard rockin’ racing amigos! I tuned 7min too late for the start and seeing good action right way.
Looks like Nasr’s closing on Van Der Zande for the lead…
This track offers fantastic variety of overtaking spots!
Besides the live timing at the IMSA web site, Al Kamel also has a feed with more information.
http://livetiming.alkamelsystems.com/imsa/
Very nice, thanks!
Great! Thanks
Keith, on the topic of this not being an “Alonso show”. Do you think this has actually been a wasted opportunity at promotion of the event??
Well I’m amazed there isn’t a UK broadcaster showing it properly. I’d’ve thought there’d be enough interest to justify it. But Eurosport are only showing a couple of hours live and that’s it.
What channel is it on in the us? Is there a stream of that channel.
Local Fox network broadcasting station.
Looking forward to the thunder storms tomorrow. Should make the end of the race interesting
Replay of Alonso having a bit of contact but looks like he’s lost three places in total, down to 14th.
That’s a great reality check for all F1 elitists, Keith.
Brundle in for a new nose – he was running just behind Alonso…
Albuquerque into the lead – Van der Zande pitted.
The DPI cars are a visual improvement over the older ugly DP cars but not by much.
Really? I think they’re miles better.
Looks like IMSA has copied Indycar, and the LED position panels change color and show how long the car has been on pit lane.
They’re probably the same panels. GP3 tested them last year.
Alberquerque’s jumped Van der Zande
Risi won’t be doing the full IMSA schedule this year but will make it to LeMans with Keating
The Quick links menu above has been updated to include the live video and live timing links for those who may need them. (Refresh the page if you can’t see them.)
RIP Eurosport 2 until 7PM TOMORROW!! :(
Unsafe release on the Mazda…
Different team running the cars from last year and Mazda still having pit stop problems. It hasn’t been easy to be a Mazda fan the last 3 years.
Euro sports gone. YouTube live links going down like a Yorkshire lass on a Friday night. I’m starting to lose the will to watch this race.
If you are outside the US, IMSA has a free official stream on their wrbsite
I’ll have a look. I’m listening on there app. It’s audio only. Cheers.
You may have to rotate your phone or tablet to get the video to show up in the IMSA app.
I’m on a stupid chat room thing in me phone. I’ve got it on the laptop now. Good timing alonso leads the race.
New fastest lap for Albuquerque.
Yay
A Ferrari catching fire…
Alonso 1st!
Only briefly – he’s in the pits now. Car looked a right handful on that in-lap!
Alonso in the interview: “You’re in the prototype, you’re always overtaking cars”. Interviewer: “And you enjoy it?” Alonso: “Yeah yeah”
Hahaha!
Love Road racing!
Live stream http://www.radiolemans.co/imsa-live-video-stream/
You can also watch several in car cameras on the IMSA web site if you want.
https://imsatv.imsa.com/
The links are in the Quick Links menu above.
Excellent finally getting tuned in and up to speed here
Alonso’s car not looking great at the end of stints but they seem to be stretching fuel longer than several of their rivals. Not really enough to make up for the pace deficit though.
The Alonso/Hanson/Norris car is now a pit stop behind the race leader, and we’ve got our first full course caution.
Now pitting! Good timing
Wahey
How much does Alex sound like his dad. Wow
Wow
Any alternative live timing? https://scoring.imsa.com/ seems to have died.
Yeah there’s one in the Quick links above.
Best looking car? I like them yellow Chorvetts
They sound insanely loud too. Always have, always will. Awesome cars.
Has the lead car got a broken headlight?
Its blinking on and off, so it has to be a loose connection.
“It’s flickering to get back to work” haha
A lesson on how a commentator doesn’t know how to finish a sentence!
Weather forecast still showing a decent chance of rain around midday (local time) tomorrow…
Out of curiosity, how does commentary work on 24 hour races? Is it short shifts or lots of overlaping commentators?
Radio Le Mans at least usually has their announcers do shifts of anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.
Thanks, my first time watching so wasn’t sure.

Only at the finish did they ever seem to synchronize. I don’t see how a non-fan could spend over two minutes watching.
“Good question.. “
Seems like we’ve had a few right-rear punctures now.
This is the 1st time I’ve seen Prototypes on banked corners. It’s a odd sight.
Have to wonder what it was like before they put the chicane in. I do find this a rather odd track. ‘Rovals’ are always a bit funny, and this is such a short track to have a long race like this on.

It gets better and better to look at for sure.
One of the Audi’s looks like it has drive through a Halfords store! Green LED strips everywhere.
Their spotter won’t have any trouble finding them!
What’s a Halfords store?
Aftermarket car parts.
Thanks.
It’s so cool to watch a series you never watch and recognize half of the field of drivers. It’s almost feels like the Masters Karting Paris Bercy legendary events held in the 1990s. Who remembers those?
Love watching those brake rotors glow under hard braking.
What time is it in Daytona?
18:35 Eastern Standard Time
Thanks
6.34 just turned it on was expecting it to be brighter
Apparently they compete with Dubai for the longest night time racing.
What makes this race so much different than Le Mans: US time zone + it’s in the middle of winter (long night)
#23 still in 8th. How long was Alonso’s first stint?
I believe it was 3 hours.
Long way to go. Hoping to see that Ligier get up to 5th. Some strong competition in prototype right now though.
2 hours
Not much hype around Alonso I’ve noticed. Certainly from commentary anyway.
Yeah, I think it’s partly to do with the Legier and the fact the field has some amazing drivers in it.
True. This race certainly doesn’t lack F1 connections!
You’re not watching the American broadcast where it’s all Alonso for much of it.
I’m in Chicago and currently watching both broadcasts. Have fox one one tv and the international broadcast on the other with a vpn. Honestly haven’t heard much about Alonso from either.
Can you hint as how to get that. My cable package
doesn’t include Fox Sports.
Did that Audi bloke just say the GT4 runs down the normal Audi production line?! Is that normal for GT cars?
WOW! 54# Dumas with a 1:18.2 lap in the dark! Apart from 7#Rahal’s 1:18.6, it’s a 1-4 sec. faster than anybody else is doing right now.
Funnily enough I just glanced at the screens and saw Norris fastest on a 1’38.6, then he was over 2s slower on the next lap. Traffic!
FUN QUESTION: How many Formula 1 Champion SURNAMES are there in this race?
er, all of them I think!
To be honest it’s a pretty bright track.
It has to be: there’s a NASCAR Monster Cup night race here and they have no headlights. But there have been serious accidents at night in the past.
We’ve got a Senna, a Fittipaldi, a Lauda… Nice. /Wow, just realized Pedro Lamy is here – he raced in F1 in 1993-1996 [sic!]
Another right-rear puncture…
charliex, caution periods or pace car laps do not compromise you in a 24h race, even more so on such a short track, because at some point you’re not seconds but laps apart from your direct competition
Last year, there was a nasty accident involving a DPI car and two slower cars which spread debris all over the track. 10 laps under full course yellow for the clean-up.
THE RAIN HAS ARRIVED!
Rain is pretty heavy now.
It’s raining but it’s not suppose to last very long.
3 Formula 1 names in the top 4: Fittipaldi, Rahal, Cheever
Although with the exception of Fittipaldi, much more legendary IndyCar names.
A full wet race on an (r)oval track – that’s a new for me!
It’s gonna get pretty chaotic.
Guess I’m not going to bed afterall
Drivers very disciplined so far – no spin-offs.
i was thinking the same, i expected a bit of chaos but no
Norris closing the gap, it was 42 sec 10 laps ago and is 29 now
Norris already on the lead. Castroneves’es last lap was 20 sec slower than Norris’es and he already dropped to 3rd
Lol
any live streaming ?
How did Alonso drop to 11th?
Their car a right rear puncture right before he got in.
I won’t be surprised when there is a huge crash on the banking before this race is over. That is at least 5 or 6 right rear punctures among the different prototypes. Continental has made changes to the LMP tires for this year, and it looks like they didn’t get it right for Daytona.
Alonso’s #23 seems to be having mechanical issues
Surprise surprise!
Brake master cylinder failure. They said it would take 20 minute to fix from the time they brought it in.
Yeah, if Alonso had luck, it would be bad luck.
Good morning guys! It looks like Alonso’s 23# can only fight for top-10 at this point, huh…
Anyone have a link with the leader board or live timing?
Ali: http://livetiming.alkamelsystems.com/imsa/
thanks looks like the imsa live timing is down.
Good morning. Does anyone know what happened to the #90? Seems to have had a drama whilst I was asleep!
can anyone give me a link where i can watch it live
https://imsatv.imsa.com
Anyone know how to watch live in the UK?
Please give me access
Access to what? The live stream? It’s not on here. Click the link

Looks like it’s going to be one of the two Cadillacs up front unless the widely-anticipated rain later on mixes things up…
Alonso few minutes ago had a spun.
Is in pit.
In terms of time remaining, we are 4 F1 races away from the finish.
What happened to the Alonso/Norris/Hanson car?
From a comment below at 6:19AM: “Brake master cylinder failure. They said it would take 20 minute to fix from the time they brought it in.”
Shame to see the Mazda’s out. Good looking car. Not very competitive at all though.
Blimey, that tweet from Hunter-Reay. Seven punctures on the same corner. Think they might be having a chat with Continental about that…
Are lapped cars allowed to overtake during FCY/SC?
Yes they can (I seem to remember Norris complaining about that rule!)
That last caution has given us a great battle for the lead – just a few tenths in it!
Ah more problems for the Alonso/Norris/Hanson car. Got to mention what a good job Senna/Owen/Di Resta/De Sadeleer are doing in the sister car though – if that was there team mates’ car we’d be hearing a lot more about their position I can’t help but think.
How have we suddenly lost the battle for the lead and #31 now being 3 laps down to the leader??
And there goes the battle for the lead as the Conway/Nasr/Curran/Middleton Whelen Engineering Cadillac hits trouble and loses three laps. Sounds like it was overheating?
And now the lead United Autosports car is in trouble too, it’s in the pits and off the podium…
That’s a big shame – was hoping for a Garforth podium (I was born there!)
+1
Great race
Nice enjoying it
Nando looks happy!
Did he give an interview or what? I missed the last hour of the race.
How do u watch lube
It looks like the #54 might have a chance if the AXR cars keep having overheating problems.
My very rough calculations predict the #31 catching the current leaders and winning the race a minute ahead of them (if the overtake is immediate).
Go go acura
The leader is lapping slower than the GTLMs at the moment. Conway consistently 6, 7, 8 seconds quicker. Don’t think it’s a foregobe conclusion just yet… Conway will be back on lead lap soon
Already is
So first 3 cars will finish on the same lap. Now I wonder what the pit-stop situation is for these.
All three very recently pitted I would not expect another pitstop. And 31 lapping about 2 seconds faster than 5 which is nowhere near enough
Think they’re all done for pit stops now. Albuquerque picking up his pace a little, Middleton not as quick as Conway was. Think we need something big to happen for a late lead change
Yeah, it looks like a wrap.
Wooooah, Audi with exploding tyre on the banking turn. Caution possible.
Provided nothing unexpected happens in these last 15 minutes Albuquerque is going to win with about 1 minute margin
Middleton could even let the leader lap him back, so he doesn’t need to do the extra lap and just finish behind him. If the gap to the 3rd car is a safe one.
Thanks for the coverage @keithcollantine, one of the MANY reasons that F1FANATIC is just the best place to be man!
