…they’ve been talking to Gateway (which is in Missouri, by the way)
I thought it was over the river, in Madison?
As @vmaxmuffin said, they could have tweaked the aero to fix the pack racing at Fontana we saw this year, the temperature change caught everyone off guard.
I can’t say I was fond of the NOLA track, and after this debacle I can’t say I’m surprised it’s gone.
So Milwaukee is gone again – no great surprise now that Andretti is having legal difficulties with his own marketing company. Even with his help, promotion was poor outside of the five counties. In the last couple of years the crowd was at least as good as Pocono – if not better – and certainly leagues ahead of Fontana. I don’t doubt it’ll be back at some point, this has happened before. The same nostalgic wave that returned Road America and Phoenix to the calendar (both with less than stellar crowd numbers last go-around) will give the Mile another chance in a few years time. I just hope people show up at the new venues. I was at the test last month and the attendance was encouraging, and I can confirm they weren’t using the chicane.
I was planning on making the trip to Boston, but things may not be sitting on solid ground out there: Boston Herald article
The series’ momentum looked positive for a while, but now I’m not so sure.
18th August 2015, 1:21 at 1:21 am #303309MatK77ParticipantHands down, the Lotus 88 twin-chassis. On the very limit of the rulebook and completely novel. I love this clip as Chapman leans on the bodywork: Secret Life of Colin Chapman
He took all of the lessons from the ground effect 78, 79, the disastrous 80, back-to-basics 81 and this was the end result. I’ve always thought it was a looker, too:

I was lucky enough to see him at several races during his time in CART, a seriously talented bloke.
31st October 2014, 13:43 at 1:43 pm #281705MatK77ParticipantThe Brazilian touring cars/stock cars run at Brasilia – I have a feeling it might be a good fit for Indycars. The facilities aren’t exactly state of the art, but half of the track is a sequence of very fast, banked right handers followed by a twisting infield switchback. Overtaking might be tough, but there’s plenty of opportunity for mistakes throughout a lap. Sure beats St. Pete for the opener.
I think Toronto has another major event this year that would shut the city down, there was talk of moving to Mosport as a backup plan. I liked the double at Toronto, the crowds are big and the track always produces action. Hopefully it returns in 2016.
Sad to see Fontana moved to mid-season and finishing up at the usually-dull Sonoma, but if the series is committed to ending before Labor Day, Fontana is a tough sell in the height of summer.
Looks good overall, nice to see a little consistency in the schedule to build up the fan base.
30th August 2014, 21:27 at 9:27 pm #272677MatK77ParticipantI like the look of some of the oddballs:
1. 1981 Lotus 88b. Chapman’s mad double chassis ground effect car. Banned.
2. 1992 Jordan 192. I always see the 7-up 191 in these lists, but I preferred the lines of the swoopier, droopier 192, if not the colour scheme. Yamaha motor was an anchor compared to the Ford in the 191.
3. 1979 Lotus 80. Another Chapman experiment with ground effect, the entire car is a wing. The skirts extend from the tip of the nose all the way to the back wing. It was a spectacular disaster.
4. 1979 Arrows A2. Ground effect wing car, another disaster.
5. 1995 McLaren MP4/9. I always liked that there was so little of it, a tiny, beautiful clean looking machine.29th August 2014, 14:20 at 2:20 pm #272603MatK77ParticipantNew venues are always welcome, but I find it difficult to get excited about this one. It looks like an overgrown kart track. Flat as a pancake, and totally featureless. It appears that the owners have bought a small plot of land and tried to fit as much tarmac into the space as possible, it’s all switchbacks.
As rickety and dangerous as Houston was, I prefer to watch the drivers dealing with the challenge of concrete barriers and a horrendous road surface than an aimless second gear bimble around a country park. And that’s speaking as someone who wants to see fewer street tracks in the series.
Moan over.
20th July 2014, 3:58 at 3:58 am #267207MatK77ParticipantAccording to the Indycar website, Race 1 will run on CNBC at 10.30am Eastern (3.30pm GMT) Race 2 will run on NBCSN at 3pm Eastern (8pm GMT).
16th May 2014, 18:39 at 6:39 pm #260559MatK77ParticipantCame across a video which shows how severe Hinchcliffe’s blow to the head was last week. Ouch.
Ignore the ridiculous talking haircut and skip to 1:29.
29th March 2014, 6:51 at 6:51 am #254348MatK77ParticipantI think it’ll take a while for Montoya to get back into it. Allmendinger struggled to re-adapt after a long absence in open-wheelers, I wouldn’t be surprised if JP spends the first few races mid-pack – although I’d love to be wrong.
I’m also not fond of the track – it’s too short, tight and overtaking opportunities are sparse. I don’t wish to see St. Pete off the calendar, but I’d rather see the season kick off with a track that’s capable of supplying fireworks instead of Party Poppers.
26th February 2014, 2:16 at 2:16 am #249853MatK77ParticipantI’ve been singing the praises of Game Stock Car to anyone who cared to listen – and several who didn’t – which is about to get this free update.
The shriek, gentlemen, the shriek.
It might not look half as flash as some of the new games out, but the physics are the mutt’s. A bargain for $US25.
18th November 2013, 18:32 at 6:32 pm #245429MatK77ParticipantI’m going to second @muzzleflash and give a big thumbs up to Game Stock Car. Driving feel and force feedback is spot on and the computer AI is remarkable. Love the F3’s, and the Formula ‘Classics’ (read MP4/4), and for $25 you can’t lose.
15th November 2013, 18:42 at 6:42 pm #245248MatK77ParticipantNot surprised by this announcement, but very disappointed nonetheless. I wish he’d had the chance of a swansong season.
I started to watch him in F3 when Magnussen Sr. was crushing it, and I got to cheer him on at countless CART/Indy races over the past sixteen (!) years.
So thankful he’s still with us after Houston, but this is the end of a motorsport era for me, really. :(
29th October 2013, 17:42 at 5:42 pm #244105MatK77ParticipantA sad state of affairs indeed. I try to keep reminding myself that things have been much worse for the series.
16th October 2013, 17:13 at 5:13 pm #243167MatK77ParticipantLooks similar to Kobayashi’s miraculous save from a couple of years ago at the same corner – I’ve never found another replay of it.
I’ve seen these kind of saves (although not as extreme) more often with the longer wheelbase cars.
7th October 2013, 17:22 at 5:22 pm #242619MatK77ParticipantABC13 reporting that all who were taken in for treatment were released from hospital as of this morning, bar Dario.
That is mind-boggling.
I wonder if Franchitti will now call time on his racing career – he’s been involved in some monster accidents, he’s got to be feeling like he’s getting too old for this.
