Never caught up with FE, tried to watch a few times but don’t quite like it. I don’t think it’s clean and fair racing, and definitely lacking depth in the information and analysis available. I found myself watching some moto GP once in a while and can enjoy a race, or some WRC (to say I’m not purely interested in F1).

I’m definitely going to watch some Extreme-E racing, really curious about the new serie.
Since I’m diverting from the question, also looking for some more W series and occasional F2 races.

@hunocsi You mean cars burning fuel for 50 min while saving tires then go at it in last minutes? Wouldn’t work that well with current teams and cars.

I am not against a return to one lap per car though. Get the chance to fully appreciate the effort of each driver, there is only one go at it with the difference in pressure it might make to the drivers. Yes conditions might evolve but it’s ok if it’s just for sprint race start grid.

Was thinking about incentive for teams and driver to push except start position for the next race. What about the best currency after money and points in modern F1. Top 5 teams would gain an extra set of fresh tires for Sunday while last 5 teams would lose a set from their allocation. A bit too gimmick in my opinion and I don’t really like it, but do I want points awarded during sprint races, not sure. Do I want cars to hold position and defend their next start, not really. Do I see other reason for teams to fight on track, no.

As stated before, I really hope they use those races as marketing product targeted to attract new fans into the sport, ie. keep them out of paywalls. That might be the major gain for F1.

No Perez as first choice, a mention to @ryanoceros for the long shot!
With the possibility to have yet a new winner next week, short term prediction should be Russell.

Longer term, I keep Russell as #1, then Norris, Stroll or Sainz in that order. Logic being that I don’t think they will be any new winner in 2021, hence Russell as #1 pick for 2022 with Mercedes (if he doesn’t win Abu Dabi), then I think McLaren with Mercedes engine will be better than RP and Ferrari. Don’t see Albon winning anytime soon.

@Lasse the whole point is to guess the next “new winner” as in “has not won before”. That’s the only certainty, he hasn’t won in F1 yet…

@enigma the funniest part is that Gasly was named a few time in the previous round (before Leclerc victory).
Quite tricky for the next one, I name Sainz as my first pick (don’t see Albon winning anytime soon), then Norris, and Russell in third.
Depends when Ferrari get it back, and how strong the McLaren is next year. I still think Russell has a shot at that Mercedes seat one day but he also worried me as he has had some blips in form when battling for points with occasional mistakes which show he is not immune to pressure…

Agree about Coulthard, he has good analysis and is quite neutral which makes what he is saying interesting and a nice addition. Was nice to have him on commentary for wseries.

Other two I like very much are Webber and Button. They say what they think and have nothing to prove. Usually have nice added value or good comments to listen to.
Those three are definitely the ones who will get most of my attention.

Usually like the guys on the skypad as well, di Resta and Davidsson have performed nicely there with some good analysis without relating too much to personal precedents.

Brundle had some nice bits but lost in too much babbling of the sky team in general. Don’t get my attention anymore.

Everyone will value different skills differently and we might not agree on a universal “best of” as it is quite subjective.

I also agree with previous comments that Hamilton and Verstappen are currently on a class of their own, but Leclerc is making a good case for himself while Vettel is doing the opposite and leaving that elite group.
For the best on a single occasion and the Wow factor, I would probably pick Verstappen. But in the other hand he still lack a bit of maturity and is a bit too reckless at time.
Best overall, I would put Hamilton as he can be the fastest on his good days but he is driving smart and know when to lift off a little bit to bring the result home. Despite that this last statement will make him lose him the title of best of the day, it makes him earn the best of overall as he is just impressive on a whole season.

To sum it up, Verstappen is the guy you want to win races but Hamilton is the one to bring home the championship.

Nice that someone remembers to reactivate this thread as we get a new winner.
It feels a bit more tricky for the next one, Leclerc was quite the obvious one especially since the start of the season. It was more a matter of when than who.

For the next one, I will go with Russell.
Albon won’t have many realistic chances to win (Mexico, Singapore and Brazil for the stronger tracks for RedBull?) and Verstappen is not the kind to let it slip very often. RedBull will probably time the engine penalty accordingly to give Max the best possible shot at it and have Albon out of sync to maximize the team result.
If Russell continues his strong showing, he might end up at Mercedes in 2021 which might still be early enough to be the next winner. I don’t think Ferrari will change their drivers line up next year and not sure RedBull will be in contention very often, plus they will give priority to Max until Albon has proven himself.
That’s based on Mercedes continuing until then and keeping a strong showing.

20 – Kubica, hasn’t been great in any race. Hard to rank him higher based on what he has shown, got a lucky point.
19 – Grosjean, too many avoidable mistakes and lack of results compared to team mate. The car isn’t great but he is not extracting much out of it either.
18 – Giovinazzi, a bit transparent with the occasional spark but it never lasts.
17 – Gasly, sub-par, could be even lower if he was not in a RBR and matched against one of the best of this season. Har to justify a higher rank given how far behind his team mate he is.
16 – Magnussen, as Grosjean, too many avoidable mistakes. Haas looks like kinder garden this year. Magnussen brought home slightly better results than Grosjean
15 – Stroll, consistently behind his team mate which hasn’t performed great either. Opportunist on first lap earning him some nice gains but otherwise nothing spectacular (lucky roll dice in UK)
14 – Perez, he was expected to crush his team mate but that hasn’t happened. Consistently leading the team but far from his best in tire conservation or race craft.
13 – Russell, difficult to rank given his car and team mate but has shown very promising result and attitude. A driver worth to be in the midfield to have a proper chance to prove himself.
12 – Hulkenberg, the occasional mistakes reminds everyone why he hasn’t got a top seat yet. Has fared well against Ricciardo but is dropping behind his team mate now that Ricciardo is getting used to the car.
11 – Ricciardo, took a while to settle in the new car and the results took some time to come. Hasn’t shown his usual late braking and brave moves, it looked a bit more desperate driving such as his quali in hungary or overtake in France.
10 – Kvyat, good return in a well known team. Has brought home some nice performance from his car.
09 – Albon, maybe not the same high than Kvyat but has been consistent and a very good beginning for a rookie.
08 – Vettel, too many mistakes to pretend to higher rank. Is in front of team mate only thanks to early season team orders.
07 – Raikkonen, seems to enjoy driving for Alfa and has shown some nice skills attacking or defending. Always good to see a driver having fun in the car and it shows in the results
06 – Sainz, the McLaren pair is pushing each other forward and difficult to separate them.
05 – Norris, some very mature and honest drives from Norris, ranked over Sainz only because he is a rookie vs more experienced team mate.
04 – Bottas, Very good start of the season which justify his position here rather than late results. Has been consistently bringing points home.
03 – Leclerc, could/should be the leading driver at Ferrari. Has made some mistakes and has been let down by his team but still showing that he fully deserves his seat at Ferrari
02 – Verstappen, in a class shared with Hamilton, we could almost share 1 & 2 between them but given Gasly performance, hard to really gauge how much is coming from Verstappen or his car (hence his rank behind Hamilton)
01 – Hamilton, has been pushed by team mate early in the year but can deliver when it matters which is the reason to him being first.

@phylyp Nice pick for Verstappen winning but it wasn’t by much and more surprisingly it was due to lack of pace from Mercedes…

Keith probably knew something when asking his question, the timing feels odd ^^

Didn’t take long to put that at risk… Mercedes will have to fight for it today.

Though call and looks more and more likely Mercedes will win every race this year. However, I still see a chance for Ferrari at Belgium out Italy GP’s given their straight line speed advantages… If Ferrari is not handing it over to Mercedes.

Otherwise, we have to rely on a Mercedes slip up as @phylyp mentioned. But Mercedes has been the perfect execution this year, difficult to imagine that slip coming from the team. Maybe one driver or both colliding, that wouldn’t be a first.

While the 5 sec penalty has allowed the steward to penalize a driver without having too much impact, I agree that it didn’t always have the intended effect and sometimes stripped us from some great battle (other cars just sticking to the back of the car ahead instead of attempting any overtaking).

I see some issues with above solutions. Slow line might be difficult to implement at some tracks (street circuits) and the slow down kind of penalty, while the technology exists and have been used (America cup for instance), it is not always spectator friendly (It’s a bit lite VSC, the effect might vary depending on where the driver takes it).

I saw a good suggestion in the comment section which is to have a give one place back or one place to driver X. If Vettel was asked to let Hamilton by, this would have negated the “advantage” he gained by cutting the track and given a chance to Vettel to still win it and amend for his mistake.
It would also prove very useful for the drivers tempted to cut the track to overtake on difficult to overtake tracks, where they usually get a 5sec penalty for cutting but can easily build a gap greater than 5sec making the penalty useless. That way everything is sorted on track and is a bit more fair.
Then additional questions need to be solved such as, should driver X still give the place back to driver Y if driver Z overtook driver Y and is in between the other two (I would say yes). What happens if driver Y pits before driver X can give the place back (then 5 sec penalty applied?). And probably other situations that I didn’t think about.

That was in combination with the red dress. We are missing Jaguar to have the green counterpart. And as Keith said, now is too late…

Actually I expect that each manufacturer will develop their car and a favored tyre and it could lead to some specificities. Buy after a few races cars properties would be known.
Thus I would not expect less predictable but more diversified.
