The video on this page has some of the same footage as those two videos, plus some:

@the_sigman, @thersquared, I believe back in the day there was a non-compete agreement between IndyCar and F1. To my understanding, that is why F1 stayed out of the US for so long and why IndyCar never went to Europe. I wouldn’t be surpsrised if there is still some form of agreement between the two or clauses in the even contracts that prevents them from holding races for both series. A few years ago I think IndyCar ran at Montreal when Formula 1 for whatever reason wasn’t (likely facility qualities).

If you aren’t interested in paying the ridiculous prices for hotels and don’t want to drive from nearby towns with cheaper hotels, an additional alternative would be to find rooms for rent by local people.

I’d use the Vacation Rentals section for Austin on Craigslist.org:

I’ve used Craigslist to find temporary rentals before and had a fair amount of success, though I encourage anyone who uses it to do a little extra diligence when exchanging with anyone as there are occasional weirdos on Craigslist offering crummy or awkward accommodations—though Austin is a small enough town I suspect there would be less of that.

Considering the speeds that are done at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and other big ovals, I have a hard time understanding why the lack of space for run-off is a problem at Peraltada. Especially considering that the catch fencing used for F1 tracks is of a higher caliber than that used at some of the United States oval tracks (According to Dario Franchitti’s tweet after the big accident at Daytona last weekend).

I am aware that FIA has calculations that severly limit various aspects of track design that keep features like Peraltada from existing, but if anyone has the money and the knowledge to find a way to make banked turns safer than they are today it would be F1.

Until then, replace the wall with a SaferBarrier, update the catch fencing, and let’s go racing.

Locally there was much talk about the Prairie Restoration they did at the track. Some considered it pretty weak and simply a ploy to get more government funding, but some is certainly better than none:

The landscaping was also interesting. I look forward to all the Cacti being larger in the future, will definitely help heighten the atmosphere:

I had been pretty critical of the SPEED Coverage earlier in there year, mostly about Fox Sports taking a few of the races and botching the retarded time-delayed-ness, but the commentary has always been the clearest strength of these guys. It was also a real treat to see and hear more Sam Posey. That man is a poet.

Bob will be missed, and so will Will if he doesn’t make the switch to NBC, but I do hope the end result is better than what SPEED provided. When you compare US broadcasts to what they have in the UK with Sky and BBC, the breadth and depth of the coverage is clearly lacking in the US, despite the lovable chumminess and insight of Steve, Bob, David, Sam, and the endlessly enthusiastic Will.

Would love to see them all together again on NBC with expanded coverage some day. Here’s to hoping.

I think an American team makes sense only if an established footing is made with the Austin or New Jersey tracks. I would love to see a Penske team, especially if backed by Ferrari engines. I consider them one of the long-time classiest racing outfits over here in America. I believe they may have tried to break into Formula 1 in the past and it didn’t work. I doubt they have the money and endless resources necessary to give it a proper go, though.

As far as other American teams go I’d entertain the idea of Chip Ganassi Racing or maybe Andretti Racing. And would love to see one of the big NASCAR teams come over—if only to see the look of shock on their faces.

I agree with @codesurge about the price of the Turn 1 seats, but don’t feel bad about not having waited. Everyone involved has been doing a good job of playing smoke and mirrors to suggest you had to buy whatever you could get your hands on.

You should be able to upgrade your tickets to Turn 1 if they are still available. When they put a second set of stands near Turn 12, they made a big deal of how they were allowing General Admission ticket holders to upgrade their purchases. They made it sound like they had made a special exception for those with General Admission, but when I called to do make the upgrade it was clear that anyone at any time can upgrade their tickets if they wish. Only you can never downgrade your ticket.

I don’t have or remember the number, but you should be able to call the ticket folks and get an upgrade to Turn 1; they were incredibly helpful, patient, and knowledgeable when I upgraded my General Admission to Turn 12.
