With a longer-wheelbase car and a radical new airbox this weekend Mercedes reckoned they made progress at the Spanish Grand Prix. But a look at the data suggests they might have done nothing more than transfer the weight of their problems from Michael Schumacher’s side of the garage to Nico Rosberg’s.

Mark Webber claimed pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, beating team mate Sebastian Vettel by one tenth of a second at the Circuit de Catalunya. Red Bull enjoyed a huge margin of superiority over their rivals with Lewis Hamilton three-quarters of a second behind the RB6 drivers.

The Red Bull duo were comfortably the fastest cars around the Circuit de Catalunya in the second practice session on Saturday. Sebastian Vettel was the only driver to set a sub-1m 20s lap and no-one got within half a second of him and team mate Mark Webber.
