Honda’s first full season of F1 competition came with the RA272 in 1965. Richie Ginther joined Ronnie Bucknum to give the Dutch-based Japanese team an all-American driver line-up.
The car was often unreliable and had only scored a pair of sixth places when the team arrived in Mexico for the final race of the year.
To considerable surprise, Ginther won the race, the Honda’s fuel injection system aiding engine performance at the high altitude circuit.
