The unusual front wing of the Arrows A22 is among the interesting sights in the contemporary F1 cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The tall front wing was swiftly banned after Arrows turned up with it at Monaco in 2001.

Several recent F1 cars are on show or going up the hill, including last year’s world championship-winning Red Bull RB6 and the Ferrari F10.

The two Renaults Fernando Alonso won championships with in 2005 and 2006 are present as static displays.

McLaren have their championship-winning MP4-23 and their less successful MP4-19 of 2004.

  1. I’d forgotten about those stupid wings on the Arrows! They popped up all over the place on the cars, glad they banned them (I think one was caught by a tyre gun when leaving the pits).

And ugh, Brawn in a Mercedes livery.

    1. Yeah! I miss the Brawn livery :/

      1. Easy. Go photocopy something at work, take out your yellow highlighter and splash a bit of yellow around. Done. 1 Brawn Livery.

      2. @floptickle Me too! I loved the white and green/luminous yellow…oh and the wheel covers.

The sponsors kind of ruined it, however, they were successful so who can blame them?

    2. I quote you

You could say the same thing about the R29 in JPS livery. Personally I enjoy seeing past cars in different livery, despite realising it’s all about the sponsors.

It would be different if a past classic like the MP4 1 showed up painted in vodafone or if mercedes still choose to show the BGP 001 in whatever their livery happens to be in 10 years.

        1. Yeah, they put an R27 in JPS livery and it’s on display at Heathrow Terminal 5 if anyone wants a looksies..

  2. How on earth could the drivers see with that wing there!

    1. LOL, exaclty what the FIA thought of it as well!

    2. @BasCB @sw6569 That must rank in the top 5 ridiculous things i’ve ever seen, madness!

  3. Glad to see Renault didn’t put their black and gold livery on the R25 or R26. I wish they would have left the car liveries the way they were when the cars were actually raced.

    1. Then again, the R29 is infinitely improved.

      1. It gives a good chance to see the shape differences between the R31 and the R29. The R29 has an enormous nose!

    2. They did put it on the R29 though. And the Lotus 125, which has caused the commentators no end of confusion – they keep saying it’s Renault’s current F1 car (it’s actually a car customers can pay to drive, not actually an F1 car at all).

Actually what is the rule of the game ? Is there such a rule that more recent cars must wear the teams’ current livery and only older cars could be excluded ?? (ex: Renault R26 & R29 differences)

    1. It depends on the whims of the owner of the car, as far as I understand it. I think some owners have had to remove tobacco liveries according to the laws of the country they live in.

      1. The Bitburger logos are missing from the Benetton B194 on the other page too.

  6. I guess the recent cars are still owned by the teams and therefore are adapted to the current livery, whilst older ones might have different owners and keep their original livery.

  7. How many times has that Brawn been re-sprayed!? I hate it when they use the livery of the new car on the older cars it looks awful!!

  8. If you ignore that ridiculous wing, the A22 was a cracking looking car. Arrows had a real knack for making great looking cars in the mid 90’s and early naughties.

Naughties? or Noughties. I’m guessing you got pretty lucky in the last decade :)

      1. That’s what happens when you type comments at work… ;)

    2. Mmm. If you ignore the awful reliability, and performance, the Arrows cars were great. Good to see Boullier has pushed his championship-winning technical director out to replace him with the genius behind Arrows, eh?

  9. Isn’t the F10 pictured in the right hand coloumn three from the bottom, the F60? The drooping nose makes me think it is.

    1. Didn’t see your post, the 3rd and 4th Ferrari photos are actually an F60.

      1. Yeah, I didn’t spot the fourth photo until after the post!

  10. Keith, there are two photos of the F60 there! You can see it from the central air intake.

    1. Thanks, have changed it.

  11. I find it ridiculous how Merc are trying to erase the Brawn car from history. Thats not a Mercedes ! Its a Brawn, in fact its a Honda with a Merc engine, and to have it in that livery is shameful.

  12. I used to love the Arrows livery when I was a kid, and still do! Orange is my favourite colour and they had Cartoon Network sponsorship, which, as a little child, was enough to win me over because I watched that channel nearly all day. I was about 6-7 years old then.

  13. I thought the Brawn oo1 was Jensons.

    1. Jenson has his own BGP001, which was used for the Silverstone launch. It still has the original, and best, livery.

  14. Nice to see that McLaren livery again. I can understand the tobacco advertising being erased (which does make the car look empty) but that was one of the nicer liveries of the past decade.

    1. It was, i also like some of the details in those pictures. Really nice Keith.

  15. Just back from Goodwood, and thanks for clearing up what that weird looking Merc GP car was! In my defence it was pre-coffee but didn’t occur to me they would vandalise a Brawn like that!

The current owner of the Arrows has a little camera mounted in there pointing back, so at least he gets an unusual shot from it :)

  16. I’m not surprised JB has his BGP. I seem to recall he finished the season in the same chassis he started in, which is unheard of these days?

  17. Red Bull demo car (periscope exhausts – back in fashion!) with rear bodywork and airbox removed (and bonus dancing RBR mechanic):

I heard someone in a colourful shirt say that they overfilled it with oil before starting it today, which would explain the huge clouds of white smoke coming from their garage… :D

  18. Gene’s F150th also running non-EBD periscope exhausts, I guess this is the Demo Car spec?

    F150th with rear bodywork removed:

    1. It’s not an F150th – it’s the F60 from 2009.

  19. Great to see Jos’ #14 Arrows running in the Monaco 1st training spec 2001. What an event…..absolutely fabulous!!

I dislike the new Ferrari livery, without the bar code and with stool symbols on the wings, they should bring to goodwood their glory cars like f2004, f2002 or even the first car with an 7-speed transmition the 640

That Red Bull RB6 is actually a Toro Rosso STR5. The “horns” are a giveaway. Sneaky
