It’s a sprint race weekend which means qualifying for the grand prix will take place on Friday evening. Plus, with points being handed out on Saturday, there’s a strong chance Max Verstappen will clinch the drivers’ title on the day before the grand prix.

All session times were initially earlier, with 17:00 for both qualifying & the race, & 17:30 for the sprint before all sessions got postponed.
While I’d prefer the earlier timings with sunset times at 17:15, 17:14, & 17:13, respectively, & also because evening timings are my least favorite, I’m okay with these timings.
If only Friday sessions started half an hour later so that FP would run from 17:00 to 18:00 & thus have the Abu Dhabi GP background.
At least next season (assuming Qatar GP keeps sprint format), 16:30-17:30 for Friday practice would mean that with sunset times at 16:43 if session times remained unchanged, which isn’t necessarily a given because the changes from initial ones earlier this year may well have been solely about the avoiding the earlier afternoon phase under hot weather even if 16:00 & 16:30 are equally in the afternoon.
