The Brazilian Grand Prix has been red-flagged after a multiple car crash at the first corner caused damage to a barrier.

The incident occured when Alexander Albon and Kevin Magnussen collided on the approach to the Senna Esses as the race began. The Williams driver lost control of his car after making contact with Magnussen’s team mate Nico Hulkenberg shortly after the lights went out.

Albon and Magnussen both came to a rest in the barriers at turn one. The crashed cars left a significant amount of debris on the track, and a tyre torn from one car struck Daniel Ricciardo as he rounded turn one.

All drivers emerged from their cars after the crash. Logan Sargeant asked about the condition of his team mate and was told “Alex is okay.”

Other drivers returned to the pits with damage to their cars, including Oscar Piastri, whose car was touched by the out-of-control Magnussen. McLaren told Piastri to turn off his car as it was no longer safe, and are attempting to repair his car in time from the restart. Hulkenberg’s car was also damaged in the crash.

The crash caused damage to a tyre barrier which requires repairs, leading to the decision to red flag the race. It is the second race weekend in a row to be red-flagged, after Magnussen’s crash halted the Mexican Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc’s race ended before the race-stopping crash. His Ferrari suffered an apparent hydraulic failure on the formation lap, sending him spinning into a barrier.

The race is set to restart at 14:31 local time. Max Verstappen kept his lead from pole position and will be followed by Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll when the race resumes.

  1. Wow, just like many people were talking about yesterday regarding Ocon, he was once arak. focusing more on blocking a teammate than making places. The guy never changes and never learns.

Ocon takes “first you have to beat your team mate” a bit too much to heart.

      1. Around 7 straight seasons of that now I think. Ironically, the only teammate he was never even close enough to clash with was Daniel. He got absolutely spanked. He wasn’t really close to Fernando last season either (Alonso had 7! mechanical retirements while in the points, 1 mechanical non-start, 1 mechanical failure and the team cross threading his wheel in Austria when he was going to finish 5th) and Ocon still only had two more points .

  2. 20 red flags in 4 seasons. Americanization of the “sport” in full force.
