Michael Andretti

Michael Andretti, CART, Surfers' Paradise, 2000

Michael Andretti, son of 1978 world champion Mario Andretti, was one of the first second-generation drivers to race in F1.

Like his father, the younger Andretti enjoyed success in American IndyCars. But his F1 career was not as successful – Andretti left F1 before seeing out his first season alongside Ayrton Senna at McLaren in 1993.

Commuting from America and switching from comparatively basic American single-seaters to cutting-edge active suspension era F1 didn’t help.

But his repeated crashes were mainly self-inflicted. He retired after scoring his only podium at Monza, and was replaced by Mika Hakkinen.
