I recently read “My Years with Ferrari” by Niki Lauda. The first half is an absorbing account of his 4 years with the Scuderia, although it definitely left me wanting more. The second part of the book is written by journalist Herbert Volker and is meant to round out the book’s presentation of Lauda. These chapters weren’t nearly as interesting for me and were more about Lauda’s personality/psyche than they were about his time with Ferrari. Overall, this one was a bit of a letdown.

Mine was this year in Canada. I had a terrific time! It was so cool to be around so many fans of the sport. My wife and I sat in grandstand 34 (hairpin), and we loved the view. We arrived in time for FP2, and I’ll never forget the anticipation and excitement I felt as I saw the first car approach the turn. The race itself was certainly thrilling, especially once it became clear that Mercedes was in trouble. The only other racing we watched was the Masters HGP, which was fantastic; among the cars we got to see were a couple of Ferrari 312T5s, a pair of Williams FW07Bs, and a Lotus 77. It was an unforgettable weekend, and I hope to get to another Grand Prix as soon as I can.

I’ve got tickets to Grandstand 34 and have some additional questions:

–What are the seats in the grandstands like? From the pictures I’ve Googled it looks like metal benches without anything to lean back against, but correct me if I’m wrong. Do people bring their own stadium cushions? It looks like folding seats are a no-no from looking at the official circuit website.
–Where can I find information on when everything is happening? I know when the F1-related events are taking place, but I’ve yet to see anything specific on the official circuit website regarding other events like the Historic Grand Prix.
–This is somewhat related to my second question, but what opportunities are there to get driver autographs? My wife and I won’t arrive until midday Friday, and I wasn’t sure whether there would be a chance Friday or Saturday. I’m guessing the sessions are popular; how far in advance of one is it advisable to arrive to avoid getting shut out?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The book that made an F1 fan out of me was Michael Cannell’s “The Limit: Life and Death on the 1961 Grand Prix Circuit.” I knew nothing about the sport going in and I was absolutely captivated by this book. I also read “In the Name of Glory” by Tom Rubython, which focuses on the 1976 season. It’s since been retitled “Rush to Glory,” presumably because of Ron Howard’s film “Rush.” It’s a decent read but gets repetitive after a while. Last year, I read Robert Daley’s “Cars at Speed,” which is pretty interesting, although I probably would have benefited from having more familiarity going in regarding some of the earlier drivers/races.

    Hi everybody,
My wife and I are hoping to go to this year’s Canadian GP. I’ve only been following F1 for a year or so and have never been to a race, so I have a lot of (hopefully not too stupid) questions:

–I was looking at getting a bronze trio, but when I click ‘order,’ I get an ‘this event has passed’ message, so I’m guessing they’re sold out. Assuming that’s the case, what are people’s recommendations out of these grandstands: 22, 31, 33, 34.
–We’re planning to drive to Montreal but would take public transportation once in the city; will parking our car somewhere for the weekend be a problem? (We’re looking to book a hotel a few miles from the circuit.)
–How early should we aim for getting to the circuit throughout the weekend?

Thanks in advance and I’m sorry if these subjects have already been addressed elsewhere on the forum.
