A1 Grand Prix has seldom been free of speculation about its future. Rumours are currently gathering pace that series founder Sheikh Maktoum will be ending his stewardship of the series ahead of a share issue on the London Stock Exchange.
The Initial Public Offering (IPO) of A1 Grand Prix shares has been confirmed by the series. But Autosport.com claim that Maktoum did not attend a recent ‘think tank’ meeting in South Africa to plan the 2006-07 A1GP season and a new executive board will take over come October.
Sceptics have been quick to pounce on A1GP’s widely-publicised financial problems throughout its first year. But much of this is only to be expected – launching something as complicated as an international motor sport series is never straightforward. The quality of racing in the first season of A1 was more than enough to convince us that the series has legs and could evolve into a genuinely worthwhile form of racing.
We’ll take a look at some of the areas it needs to improve on in a later post.
