Zane Maloney took his second FIA Formula 3 pole of the year at Zandvoort, after qualifying ended early due to a red flag.
The Trident driver became the first driver to take more than one pole position, setting the fastest lap ahead of Victor Martins and Jak Crawford.Coming into this penultimate weekend of the 2022 championship, Isack Hadjar was leading the championship by one point to Oliver Bearman, one point ahead of Victor Martins who himself led Arthur Leclerc by just three points.
Martins was fastest following the opening stints by drivers, at relatively high fuel. The only driver to attempt to run on a empty track was Francesco Pizzi. He was also the only driver to really have an issue with traffic, as the other 29 cars in the field filtered back onto the track during his flying lap, forcing him to abort his run
With so many cars around the relatively cramped Zandvoort track, queues easily built up towards the end of the lap. Maloney set the fastest time with just under ten minutes remaining, before a group of cars returned to the pits to take what looked like a third run to the chequered flag.
Martins did not go out for another attempt, his session seemingly done after failing to beat Maloney. Other drivers, including Bearman and Crawford, did go out for a final improvement to challenge Maloney’s time, only to be foiled in the final minute of qualifying.
The session was red flagged with 44 seconds remaining, ending qualifying early after William Alatalo went into barriers at the banked turn three. Bearman’s final lap was ended by the flag, putting him well down the order.
Maloney takes four points for the pole position and will start first for Sunday’s feature race, with Martins in second. Hadjar fared better in qualifying around Zandvoort than he had in Spa but will start sixth, in the feature race of the weekend. Leclerc’s qualifying put him in a disastrous 20th on the grid, while Bearman’s red-flagged lap left him 14th.
Juan Manuel Correa will take pole for tomorrow’s partially-reversed-grid sprint race, with Gregoire Saucy alongside him on the front row.
