After Daniel Ricciardo drove his RB to his first points of the season in the Miami Grand Prix sprint race last weekend, RB team principal Laurent Mekies says his team’s senior driver is “back in great form”.

Ricciardo qualified fourth on the grid in sprint race qualifying and finished there, securing five points for RB. Team mate Yuki Tsunoda added another seven across the sprint race and the grand prix.

“It was particularly gratifying to see Daniel back in great form, demonstrating the skills and determination we know have always been there,” Mekies said. “Unfortunately, he started on the back foot on Sunday from P20. In the second stint, he got stuck in traffic and could not move up the order and had to settle for P15.

“As for Yuki, his fourth Q3 appearance out of six races this season underlines how consistently he is performing and today, he underlined his maturity with an intelligent, yet aggressive and super quick drive from tenth on the grid to seventh at the flag.”

Porsche Penske quickest in Spa practice

The number six Porsche Penske team of Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor were quickest at the end of the first day of practice for the Six Hours of Spa World Endurance Championship event.

The number six car set the best time of the day with a 2’04.162, a tenth quicker than the number 50 Ferrari of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, with the number two Cadillac of Earl Bamber and Callum Ilott third.

Qualifying for tomorrow’s race will take place this afternoon.

Andretti extend Formula E deal with Porsche

Andretti’s Formula E team has announced it will remain with Porsche powertrains until the end of the 2026 season.

The team have run with Porsche power since the arrival of the Gen3 car at the start of 2023. The team’s driver, Jake Dennis, secured the world championship title last season.

“There was never any doubt in our mind about who we’d want to be working with,” said team principal Roger Griffiths. “We have had a very special relationship with Porsche Motorsport, both on and off the track, and we have seen an awful lot of success together. Hopefully, we can share more success in the future.”

Rasmussen wins simraing title

Red Bull driver Frederik Rasmussen clinched the 2023 F1 Simracing championship title after a dramatic final round saw a three way showdown between Rasmussen, Thomas Ronhaar and Bari Broumand.

Rasmussen had finished runner up in the last four seasons of the series, but won three of the 12 races before a fourth place finish was enough to secure his first F1 Simracing world championship title.

Ronhaar finished second in the championship for Sauber with Broumand third for Ferrari and Mercedes’ Jarno Opmeer fourth.

With continuing debate over Andretti possibly joining F1, MichaelN looks at the stats…

Since we’re now a quarter of the way into the season, it seems fair to have a look at the teams that have failed the FOM-standard created for Andretti – namely that teams need to be competitive for podiums and wins.

So far, only Red Bull (nine), Ferrari (six) and McLaren (three) have been on the podium.

They are also the only three teams to have won a race: Red Bull (four), Ferrari (one) and McLaren (one).

The rest has failed the test, with Williams and Sauber not even scoring a single (!) point…

  1. but from initial photographs it looks as if the new wheel arches are creating less upward spray and are instead pushing standing water outward.

    So instead of just being blinded while following directly behind a competitor, they will now also be blinded off to the sides as well. Excellent.

    Putting guards over the wheels doesn’t address the cause, which is that the cars are lifting too much water from the track surface in the first place.
    But given F1’s ‘solutions’ to the dirty air problem, this comes as absolutely no surprise either. Half-baked ideas to tackle symptoms rather than causes is F1’s thing. They never seem to be able to admit that too much aero creates more problems than it solves.

    And that McLaren photo really shows how few people actually work for an F1 team these days – it’s abundantly clear why it’s so difficult for them to implement sufficient staff rotation with such a long calendar….. /s

          The worst part is that for once I tried to make a good point, and left all the sarcasm and punch lines out.

    I haven’t heard anyone complain about VSC being too slow before, so weird.

    COTD: True, but I’m positive both Williams & Sauber will eventually score a point or points so that no team will finish the season at zero.

    I think his form is quite consistent, if you ignore the one anomalous high.

    COTD: An interesting use of stats that demonstrates the veracity of the old saying “There are lies, damned lies, and statistics”
    Far better, when talking of people competing for podiums, to look at how many drivers/teams almost made it to the podium and to use a larger sample size.

    1. Yes, consistently bad with sprint & its qualifying an exception to the rule.
      Anyway, my point was precisely that normal service resumed for standard qualifying & race, so temporary in this regard.

  4. On the contrary, I actually think those statistics paint a pretty rosy picture of reality. It might have been only 1 driver competing for wins. Everyone has always allowed Max past as they know it’s not worth fighting him as they will lose. Hopefully he now has a challenger, but I’m sure everyone except McLaren will bring heavy upgrades for the next race, the first to return to Europe, so time will tell.

    And as for every team managing to score a point by season’s end, it’ll all be decided by a single random race of attrition which will not reflect the season as a whole. Face it – the points system is really broken. And going from 10 to 12 positions will not sufficiently fix it at all.

    1. Id argue the points system is not the problem there. Its actually the hierarchy of performance, or better said the disparity of performance between the top teams and the rest

      1. Yes, it happens very often to see, especially in quali, 2 cars of the same team right behind each other, showing how clear the hierarchy is.

      2. And then indeed, we’re in a time where the top 5 teams can rarely be challenged, leaving the breadcrumbs for the others.

  5. Great to see Frederik Rasmussen winning the title. I was one of his team mates when he was starting, when iRacing implemented team races back in 2015 I think. He was 13 or so at the time and he already was the fastest on the team, which had very good drivers. He soon moved to a better team and started his journey properly.

  6. Ricciardo needs consistent results. His Mexico race last year was good and Miami Sprint this year. I can’t say he’s been very good otherwise. Yuki is far more consistent. I still want to see Lawson in one of those seats tbh.

  8. Oh dear, I think Wayne Taylor made it as far as the start line before crunching his car. An expensive trip, anyway.
