@cobray It doesn’t say that. It’s not ambiguous.
I obviously should have said read the whole thing while actually paying attention.

What an absurd conclusion that article comes to. At the time of standing on the podium, Massa knew nothing about Crashgate. How was he more magnanimous thinking he’d lost with controversy, vs Hamilton shaking […]

@cobray The rules do not say that the Race Director can override the safety car procedure. I suggest you don’t take a single paragraph out of context, and instead read the whole thing.
The Race Director has […]

Any source to all teams accepting the early withdrawal of the safety car was entirely legal?
Adam Hardwick commented on the post, Hamilton: "My worst fears came alive" in Abu Dhabi finale controversy 3 days, 17 hours ago
@MichaelN Putting aside that Hamilton WAS disadvantaged by only some cars being allowed through, the REAL issue is that the rules explicitly stipulated that the SC was required to do one more lap, meaning the race […]

@sihrtogg The lapped cars part is a distraction. According to the rules, that race should have ended under the safety car. There is no ambiguity, no “who knows what difference it would have made”, no grey area. […]

@harrydymond If you want to rely purely on logic, then we still end up in the same place.
If, as you argue, the word “any” can either mean “some” or “all”, then let’s look at what that means. If “some”, it […]

@harrydymond Yes they did. See – a different context yields a different meaning for the word “any”, but we were both able to work out that that meaning was.
Adam Hardwick commented on the post, FIA changes F1 rule on lapped cars overtaking Safety Car after Abu Dhabi row 4 months, 4 weeks ago
@drmouse I’m not totally convinced there’s anything wrong with that rule. I think the interpretations that give the Race Director carte blanche power of huge swathes of the regulations are pretty silly. Certainly […]

@harrydymond You’re right that they do have different meanings, but those meanings converge and are synonymous in this context.
Even in programming languages, context is critical. I’m also a programmer myself, […]

erikje: There is no rule that states the Race Director has the right to ignore rules. You may be referring to the rule that states the Race Director may overrule the Clerk of the Course. But of course, I’m sure […]
Adam Hardwick commented on the post, FIA changes F1 rule on lapped cars overtaking Safety Car after Abu Dhabi row 4 months, 4 weeks ago
This rule change is a distraction. Yes, the rule wasn’t followed, and yes, this change will avoid a repeat of the moronic any/all argument, but it’s not the part that was the real problem.
Unless the clerk of […]

@harrydymond Programming languages are not relevant in this discussion, as we are not communicating in (nor are the rules written in) a programming language. Different languages have different features. And one of […]

@drmouse Totally agree.
If the rules aren’t changed, if a Race Director doesn’t directly interfere, then we can only assume that he approves of the race result – not that he can’t change it.
Adam Hardwick commented on the post, Mercedes made 'concerted campaign to discredit' Verstappen's title win – Horner 5 months ago
@robbie So Red Bull didn’t stage a “reconstruction” of the incident and try and have the penalty increased? No one in the Red Bull team suggested the accident was caused deliberately?
Red Bull might be fast, […]

@sjaakfoo The root of the problem is not solved. The FIA still haven’t said that Masi broke the rules, meaning it could happen again. Until any suggestion that a Race Director can ignore the regulations in favour […]

@icarby It is not in the rules. There seems to have been some kind of unspoken agreement that it should, I would have expected some kind of rule about it to be brought in after 2012 if it was that much of a problem.
