It’s difficult to tell what he means. They had to run the Renault PU turned down towards the end of the year to end their reliability issues – Hartley turned up in the middle of all that, so he’s probably used to less power!

With Red Bull potentially heading for divorce from Renault, it made an awful lot of sense for their junior team to take up the abandoned Honda power unit supply for 2018.
Toro Rosso may be a bit of a guinea pig […]

If Mercedes and Ferrari benefit from the advantage of being able to develop their chassis and power unit alongside each other, the same should apply to Renault.
But it only returned to F1 as a full manufacturer […]

Whoops, I see why that would seem confusing. They’re wide in width, narrow in terms of their depth.

Thanks @newfangled. It is certainly an interesting design choice and I’m surprised others haven’t gone for it, although it looks pretty difficult to manufacture.

The idea in itself was a very good one, but it was unreliable and difficult to get working consistently. Teams have since come up with much more stable aerodynamic features (i.e. vortex structures) to produce a similar effect

Thanks @shimks, much appreciated

The McLaren MCL33 is the team’s first car to be powered by a Renault engine. It’s a change the team hope will make them more competitive and soon, though it meant a few compromises for their new car.
Work had […]

It is indeed pullrod actuated – a mistake on the official website!

With the Williams FW41 the team intends to reverse the gradual slide in competitiveness since its strong performance in the first year of the V6 hybrid turbo engine regulations.
Having returned to the team last […]

The nose and front wing combined are worth about £200,000!

It’s the end of the bargeboard, with a small piece of bodywork lying horizontally on top of it

Ferrari nearly got it right in 2017. The start of the season was very promising: a strong, adaptable chassis combined with a power unit nearly on par with Mercedes’ allowed them to contest for the title.
Then […]

It’s difficult to justify radical design changes unless there is a significant benefit in doing so simply due to the complexity of the cars. It’s much more desirable to take an iterative, evolutionary approach […]

Haas, Williams and Sauber all have the lower spar positioning. Sauber have used it in a slightly different way though

Red Bull has traditionally left it late to launch its new car, and then only shown as little of it as possible. But the team made a disappointing start to the new season 12 months ago and decided to shake things […]

When Haas arrived in F1 two years ago it had the advantage of being able to lean heavily on technical partner Ferrari for many of the components which went into its first car, the VF-16.
Last year’s significant […]

Yes, they have mounted them to the nose with three small aerofoils overlapping eachother. Slightly helps clean up air ahead of the front suspension.
