Video: Funny F1 moments

And now for something completely different.

It’s Sunday afternoon and, as a break from the story we’re all a bit sick of, here’s a selection of some of my favourite funny F1 moments – featuring Nigel Mansell, Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, and everyone’s favourite F1 comedy double act: Nelson Piquet and Eliseo Salazar.

James Hunt versus Patrick Depailler

After coming off worst in an overtaking move at Monte-Carlo, James Hunt squares off against a marshal and waits around on track to make his feelings clear to Patrick Depailler.

Pitlane problems

David Couthard and Roberto Moreno struggle with the pit lane entrance at Adelaide in 1995.

Nelson Piquet and Eliseo Salazar

Piquet throws kicks and punches at Salazar after being taken out of the lead of the 1982 German Grand Prix by the Chilean. I think the funniest part of this encounter was the part you didn’t see on television – Piquet nabbing the only car back to the pits, leaving Salazar to walk almost two miles…

Murray and Mansell 1

Famed British television commentator Murray Walker enquired too closely about Nigel Mansell’s head injury – by poking it with his finger.

Murray and Mansell 2

Mansell on cringe-worthy ’90s television show Noel’s House Party getting ‘gunged’.

The under-rated wit of Mika Hakkinen

For those of you with dried tastes in humour here’s the always understated Mika Hakkinen deflecting another dumb press conference question.

Water fight

Eddie Irvine chucks water at Hakkinen mid-speech, causing the Finn to head of after him with a jugful. He returns with an empty jug…

Michael who?

A distracted Jean Alesi struggles to remember the name of the guy who just beat him. Presumably once Michael Schumacher nabbed his drive for 1996 Alesi didn’t have any trouble remembering him.

  4. What did Patrick Depaillier do that was so bad? As far as I can tell James just out-braked himself.

  5. I’m not sure Eric! But the pair had a run-in at Long Beach in 1976 which also left Hunt standing by a broken car, shaking his fist…

  6. Plus, Hunt seemed to have an amazing ability to hold a grudge, especially concerning Patrese.

  7. the link from response comment number 2 is absolutely the most hillarious (re: coulthard interview). i’ve haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. thanks tommy. also, great post idea keith

  8. A great post – very good finds!  I like to see the human side of F1, like Hakkinen vs Irvine with water, and DC’s interview cheekiness.  Makes the otherwise dull sport more fun.  Good stuff.

Although most F1 ads have been the definition of "cringe-worthy" (see: Schumacher and Raikkonen’s recent spot for Fiat…) a certain few have been fantastic…

  13. So the rumours are true – Kimi does have teeth !
That was hilarious. Possibly because it was so out of character?
    Anyway, keep ’em coming !

  14. Since we are on a bit of a Montoya theme, here is one I particularly liked (maybe because it happened right where I was sitting – the whole grandstand were up on our feet cheering – or was it jeering? )
