Daniil Kvyat will start the Austrian Grand Prix from the pit lane following his crash in qualifying yesterday.
The Toro Rosso driver sustained significant damage to his car after experiencing a suspension failure at turn eight. The team has replaced the survival cell on his STR12 as well as its gearbox.
“As the survival cell of car number 26 has been changed after the end of the qualifying session, this car should now be required to start from the pit lane according to Article 23.2 of the 2016 Formula One Sporting Regulations,” noted technical delegate Jo Bauer.
Toro Rosso chief race engineer Phil Charles said the team was working to fully understand the cause of his crash. “I think it is only fair to say so far we see that Daniil has come into contact with the large sausage kerbs on the exit of turn eight and that from the data we see some large and oscillatory loads in the suspension as a result,” he said.
“Unfortunately after this the car made contact with two barriers. This has left us with some damage to the nose and front of the car as well as to the rear suspension.”

Just not been his luck this year. It is harsh to blame him really. Yes he shouldn’t have gone wide but there is simply no justifiable reason for a dangerous crash on that scale.
