Reigning world champion Nico Rosberg got back behind the wheel of a Mercedes Formula One car for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend.
The annual celebration of speed on Lord March’s estate also included appearances from many of the current F1 teams plus a collection of great and obscure F1 machinery.
Several cars raced by the late John Surtees made an appearance, including a Honda of the type used to win the Italian Grand Prix 50 years ago.
Among the more curious cars on display and on the hill included the peculiar Eiffelland F1 car with itscentral, stalk-mounted rear view mirror, and a rare example of a Ferrari which raced in the Indianapolis 500.
Here’s a selection of pictures from the event.

That’s most definately a 49 Newey is driving. The Unraced showcar, i believe.

49b to be precise :)

I don’t actually know but the spec looks more like the 49C to me. The b had that strange enginecover-wing-thingy if i’m not mistaking (Monaco 68 spec at least). However as it is apparently a ford show car that was only build to running order when newey bought it as far as i know i’m not sure wether you can actually define its spec.

Every year same problem, why the heck would you paint old cars with current liveries? It annoys me so damn much. Imagine a sharknose Ferrari plastered with Santander logos, we may have that in 5 or 10 years.

@carlitox +1. All they need to do is just take off the logos of the sponsors that were partnering the team at the time of any given older car being active, but leave the original livery color itself alone.

@jerejj Nah, leave them just as they belong including sponsors. What you really need to do is fix the rules so you can run a contemporary car without all the ‘Booohooo testing jada jada jada’. It really IS that simple. Also, if they’re gonna do that, at least put the number 1 on the champ’s car?

Don’t be dramatic, the W05 is very much a contemporary F1 car and the W08 livery looks better on it. Classic cars won’t be reliveried, they generally don’t touch anything pre 2009.

I was never a Rosberg fan but it doesn’t seem right that he’s retired so young. He looks right at home in that race suit, maybe he’ll make a comeback with another team in a few years with a stipulation that Lewis can never be his teammate.

Or when Lewis moves on from Mercedes.

:D Nico was going for it.
How was the laptime? F1 should be close to record speed on such an event right?

No way, wet tyres, no grip, he was slower than the formula e car (which was actuallu very fast).

Lap record if I recall correctly is held by Nick Heidfeld in a 98 or 97 McLaren!

One thing i noticed at goodwood was rosbergs ’14 mercedes was close to, if not the worst sounding car of the whole event. Thankfully in 2017 the hybrids are sounding a bit better.

Nice to see the old Brabhams out, especially the BT52. That is easily one of the best-looking race cars ever and the BMW turbo always sounded good to me…like a small, but very loud and very dangerous beast lived under the engine cover and was very displeased about its confinement.
