New Austria-style kerb to enforce track limits at Club

2018 British Grand Prix

A new kerb will be added at Club corner to stop Formula 1 drivers abusing track limits during the rest of the British Grand Prix weekend.

Several drivers exceeded track limits between turns 17 and 18 during today’s practice sessions. The run-off area previously included a strip of Astroturf to discourage from from running wide to gain an advantage.

Esteban Ocon said he supports the change.

“I think it’s right because of course you don’t want to see cars going off-track and gaining an advantage,” he said.

“We all did it today, I tried 20 metres off the line of the track, I went the same speed. It’s good to put it. I did prefer the Aatroturf, the way it was last year.”

The matter was discussed during today’s drivers briefing and the decision was taken to add a ‘sausage’-style kerb at the corner. “Not the small [kerbs] that were breaking floors and stuff,” said Ocon, “it’s like turn one [at the Red Bull Ring], the one you skateboard on if you go in the middle.”

Nico Hulkenberg said he didn’t think there was much time to be gained by running very wide at the corner.

“Some do it a little bit, some were a bit more extreme and then really off the track. Actually I’m not that sure that if you go really wide, of course you can go on throttle earlier, but you also have to take more distance.”

  1. It’s a small point I know, but I haven’t been to Silverstone in nearly 20 years and I’m having difficulty relating the new turn numbers to the names of corners . . . The text of some of the articles here identifies some corners by name and others by number; not necessarily easy to relate them to each other.
So on this page https://www.racefans.net/f1-information/going-to-a-race/silverstone-circuit-information/ could I suggest that you add the names of the corners to the corner numbers so that it becomes easier to identify which is where.
Also, if I click on the small Allianz diagram ot the foot of the page to see a full size version, the image link is broken (https://www.racefans.net/2013/03/08/2013-f1-season-preview-20-questions/13allianz_f1_08_greatbritain_rbh_v03/).

  2. Good.

Particularly in Qualifying if you get all four wheels off your time should be scrubbed. On all tracks all the time. None of this “gaining lasting advantage” nonsense either. If you’re not good enough to keep your car on the track you’re not good enough to qualify.
