Ferrari took back their home Grand Prix win last year, with Charles Leclerc’s victory at Monza but with any hope their Belgium Grand Prix pace might be an aberration fairly firmly crushed in the practice sessions, it would take an extreme optimist to hope for the same again this year.

Mercedes have led the sessions from the Honda-powered Red Bull and Alpha Tauri cars, with eight tenths of a second to their next competitors on medium tyres and almost a whole second on soft tyres.

Monza is the only track Alpha Tauri (then Toro Rosso) have ever won at, with Sebastian Vettel in 2008 but after an astonishingly strong showing in both practice sessions, they seem to be in the mix with sister team Red Bull for best of the rest, behind Mercedes. Pierre Gasly, in particular, put in very impressive times in second practice.
