Carlos Sainz Jnr will not start the Qatar Grand Prix after suffering a technical problem on his car before the race.

A fuel leak was discovered on his Ferrari around an hour before Sunday’s grand prix was scheduled to begin.

The team initially tied to fix the problem, but it quickly became clear that it could not be solved in time for the start.

Sainz was due to line up from 12th on the grid following his shock elimination from Q2 on Friday. His grid spot will now be left vacant for the race start and Yuki Tsunoda will have the sixth row of the grid to himself.

The Ferrari driver finished sixth in yesterday’s sprint race. His team’s only hopes of scoring points today now lies with Charles Leclerc who starts in fifth.

Sainz arrived in Qatar having scored points in all of the preceding 13 rounds. That run will not end this weekend as he scored three points for sixth place in the sprint race yesterday.
