Sean Gelael triggered this brutal crash for Antonio Giovinazzi during Sunday morning’s GP2 race – but the race stewards surprisingly took no action:

It’s hard to think of a more shocking piece of driving than this in recent seasons which has gone completely unpunished.

Gelael’s reaction to the criticism he face for the crash on Twitter was as follows:

Giovinazzi retweeted the latter. Note the pair were team mates in 2014 in the Carlin squad backed by Jagonya Ayam, the Indonesian fast-good chain owned by Gelael’s father Ricardo, who continued to back the pair as team mates in the ELMS with SMP racing this year.

The replays above also do a pretty good job of illustrating how the asphalt did a much better job of arresting Giovinazzi’s speed until he hit the gravel trap. The full-speed view shows just how brutal his eventual hit with the barrier was.

Shameful decision. How are drivers going to learn that moves like that are simply not right without getting some sort of punishment? Many will draw comparison to the Hamilton/Rosberg clash but if anything, this one is more similar to the crash caused by Alfonso Celis at Hungary in the Formula 3.5 V8 not too long ago.

This would anger me, but this kind of thing happens so often these days that I’ve become pretty resigned that dangerous driving can be gotten away with in GP2.
